Tall Trees
INTEXT QUESTIONS 4.1
1.) Which parts of the tree does the poet describe as its head and feet? Why?
The poet imagines a tree with its head at the top and its feet at the roots. Tall trees have been personified by the poet as tall people. Although the trees’ feet (roots) appear to be firmly planted in the ground, their heads appear to be close to the clouds because of their height.
2.) What does the phrase ‘feet in the earth’ mean in the context of trees?
The expression “feet in the earth” refers to a tall tree’s roots going deep into the soil to provide a firm foundation.
3.) a.) What do you think the phrase ‘feet in the earth’ might mean in the context of a person who is tall (empowered) like the tall trees?
When referring to a person, the phrase “feet in the earth” has a different connotation. A tall person (someone with power, position, influence, or wealth) who maintains his or her composure in the face of success or power could be said to have “feet in the earth.” He/she never loses sight of the fact that they are just regular people like everyone else, even though their heads may be held high.
b.) Have you met or do you know such a person? Why do you think that this person is like a ‘tall tree’?
Yes , I have. Such a person who has the right influences is humble and have their feet on the ground. They never loose their composure and maintain cordial relationships with others.
4.) In what ways do the trees behave like human beings in the poem?
The poet compares large trees to people. He observes that they are acting like people. Like humans, the tall trees keep an eye on the clouds and their surroundings. In the same way that night watchmen keep watch over the sleeping world, they provide shelter for birds.
