Ans- carving stone and making statues was the old man’s profession, He was dedicated to his work. For him his work was a form of worship

Ans- He was very dissatisfied with his work and his life mainly because it didn’t pay enough.
3.) How did the old man learn carving? What did he expect from his son?
Ans- He learnt carving from his own father. He expected his son to do the same and carry forward his traditional craft.
4.) The young man decided to leave his father and his work because:
Ans- c.) He wanted to earn more money.
5.) What was the young man’s opinion about his father’s work? Do you think he was right?
Ans- He believed that his father couldn’t earn much by pursuing his craft. To some extent yes, however his father experienced a different satisfaction as he was doing what he loved.
6.) What did Gopal suggest to his father? What was his father’s response?
Ans- He recommended that his father relocate to Agra and change his line of work. The elderly man replied that it was an act of service to God and that he wanted to uphold the 100-year-old custom and carry on with his work.

C.) Suppose you are the old stone mason. Your son has left you and the family business and has gone away. Express in 50-60 words what sort of thoughts came to your mind at his behaviour?
Ans- A feeling of dejection and disappointment would cloud my thoughts. Sorrow and grief would naturally consume me. My son deserting my family business would only mean that there would be no one after me to continue the business that I and my family have built over the time. As a result i would have to either appoint a new owner for the business to flourish in future or to let it perish after my demise.

I.) 1.) When Salim came to the old man to serve him tea, “his voice was filled with concern.” What do you think Salim was concerned about?
Ans- Salim was concerned about the old man’s physical condition/ well being.
2.) Who was Salim? What was his relation with the old man?
Ans- The stone mason’s house had a boy named Salim who worked there, made him tea, and looked after him. The old mand was his master, and he was a servant boy.
3.) What was the old man’s worried about?
Ans- He was worried about how he would finish the statue all by himself.
4.) Why did he wish Gopal was with him?
Ans- He struggled with carving statues’ hands and faces. Because he was too frail to use the hammer forcefully, he wished Gopal was there to assist him in finishing the statue.
5.) Salim said “….. it comes from somewhere deep inside you.” Explain the meaning of the planes in your own words in 2-3 sentences.
