His father Chandragupta was the first ruler of the Gupta dynasty and took the title of maharajadhiraja which was also used by Samudragupta. ii.) King Harshavardhana ruled nearly 1400 years ago.He was not the eldest son of his family but ascended the throne of Thanesar after the death of his father and elder brother. He was also a great and powerful king. He brought Kanauj under his control,sent army toBengal, defeated Magadha. He was very successful in the east but was unable to cross the Narmada to control Deccan but was stopped by Chalukya king Pulakeshin II.
iii.) Kalidasa was a famous poet and wrote about the life in king’s court.He was the court poet of King Vikramaditya or Chandragupta II. He wrote a famous play ‘Abhijnana Shakuntalam’ which was story of love between a King Dushyanta and a young woman Shakuntala.

i.) The Gupta empire was very large and it followed a very extensive administrative system. Village was the smallest unit of administration. Few administrative posts were hereditary and sons inherited their father’s position. Ex: Harisena was the court poet of Samudragupta and ‘maha-danda-nayaka’ or chief judicial officer like his father. Many officials performed many duties together like Harisena was kumar-amatya (important minister) and ‘sandhi-vigrahika’ (minister of war and peace). There were ministers like chief banker, chief craftsman etc. Men from powerful and important families looked after the administration of their provinces.
ii.) The Pallavas and Chalukyas were the most important dynasties in south India. The Pallava kingdom was large in size and spread from south -west nearKanchipuram, the capital city to the Kaveri delta. The Chalukya kingdom was around the Raichur Doab between Krishna and Tungabhadra rivers. Aihole was the capital city of the Chalukyas. The Pallavas and the Chalukyas attacked each other, they plundered the capital cities mostly for wealth.
iii.) Pulakeshin II was the most powerful king of the Chalukyan dynasty. His court poet Ravikriti wrote his ‘prashasti’ which is an important source of information about the king. Pulakeshin II invaded both east and west coasts and successfully stopped the conquest of Harsha to his kingdom.
