Q4. Very Short Answer Type Questions
i.) Sangha was a form of government where there were many rulers and not one Raja. Ex: Vajji

i.) Vajji was an important mahajanapada. It was under a different form of government, known as gana or sangha ruled by many rulers and each one was known as a raja. These rajas performed rituals together. They met in assemblies to decide what had to do when they were attacked by other enemy through discussion and debate. They also planned about the development of their Sanghas together. The women, dasas and kammakaras were not allowed to participate in these assemblies.
ii.) Magadha had two very powerful rulers, Bimbisara and Ajatasattu. They conquered other janapadas and consolidated their kingdom Magadha. Mahapadma Nanda was another important ruler who extended his control up to the north-west part of the subcontinent.

i.) The Mahajanapadas were divided into main four social categories called as Varnas. These were Brahmins, Kshatriyas, Vaishyas and Shudras. They were assigned with different responsibilities to perform in the society. Brahmins studied and taught the Vedas, performed sacrifices and received gifts. Kshatriyas fought wars protected people of their janapads. They were the rulers of the janapads. Vaishyas were farmers, herders, and traders and gave gifts to the Brahmins and Kshatriyas. The Shudras were considered the lowest varna and served the other three groups.

ii.) Magadha was a very powerful mahajanapada. The rivers like the Ganga and Son provided good transport, water supplies and made the soil fertile. Magadha had forests that provided elephants which were captured and trained for the army. Forests provided wood for building houses and chariots. There were iron ore mines in the region that was used to make strong tools and weapons. The two most important rulers of Magadha, Ajatsattu and Bimbisara were very powerful kings. They conquered many other lands and increased the power of Magadha.
