1.) Answer the following questions.
(i) What are the three qualities that played a major role in the author’s climb?
Answer: Endurance, persistence and will power are three qualities that played key role in the author’s climb.
(ii) Why is adventure, which is risky, also pleasurable?
Answer: Adventure is an exciting thing to do but at that same time it might be risky too. But with pain pleasure comes too and this is why being the highest peak the Everester feel that despite its risk factors the adventure was pleasurable. It made him into completely different person.
(iii) What was it about Mount Everest that the author found irresistible?
Answer: The author is in complete awe of Mount Everest’s beauty. He feels it is mystical and he is spellbound by its aloofness, ruggedness and feels these make it irresistible. It is also highest and mightiest one.
(iv) One does not do it (climb a high peak) for fame alone. What does one do it for, really?
Answer: Climbing highest mountain is in itself a big thing. With physical strain there are lot of emotional ups and downs too. The experience is more than physical, it is emotional and spiritual too. One does this for his satisfaction.
(v) “He becomes conscious in a special manner of his own smallness in this large universe.” This awareness defines an emotion mentioned in the first paragraph. Which is the emotion?
Answer: The emotion mentioned in the first paragraph is –humility.
(vi) What were the “symbols of reverence” left by members of the team on Everest?
Answer: The author left on Everest a picture of Guru Nanak. Rawat left a picture of Goddess Durga. PhuDorji left a relic of the Buddha. Edmund Hillary had buried a cross under a cairn (a heap of rocks and stones) in the snow. These were the symbols of reverence left by the members of the team on Everest.
(vii) What, according to the writer, did his experience as an Everester teach him?
Answer: The author changed into a completely different person. Not just physical but it was a total emotional and spiritual experience for him. It taught him to face his life’s problems with determination and he believes that there is an internal summit in everyone and one has to deal with it.
