Comprehension Check
1.) What had happened to Jody’s father?
Answer: Jody’s father had been bitten by a rattlesnake.
2.) How did the doe save Penny’s life?
Answer: When Jody’s father Penny was bitten by rattlesnake he quickly killed a doe and used its heart and liver to draw out the poison and this saved his life.
3.) Why does Jody want to bring the fawn home?
Answer: The doe was fawn’s mother who lost its life saving Penny’s life. Jody was unable to forget the incident thought of poor little fawn. He thought to bring the fawn home because he might be hungry and scared.
4.) How does Jody know that the fawn is a male?
Answer: The male fawn had spots in a line this is what Jody’s father told him about the fawn and in this way Jody knows that the fawn is a male.
5.) Jody didn’t want Mill-wheel with him for two reasons. What were they?
Answer: Mill –wheel went with Jody to search fawn and suddenly Jody felt that Mill-wheel should not accompany him for two reasons. If the fawn was dead, or could not be found, he didn’t want Mill-wheel to see his disappointment and if the fawn was alive ,the meeting would be intimate and full of tender love which he didn’t want to share it with anyone. These two were the reasons why Jody didn’t want Mill-wheel with him.
6.) Why was Mill-wheel afraid to leave Jody alone?
Answer: As Jody was a young boy ,Mill-wheel was afraid that he might get lost or get bitten by the snake.
7.) How did Jody bring the fawn back home?
Answer: Luckily, Jody finds the fawn. The fawn gets scared at first but then Jody manages to take him and takes him in his arms and goes through the forest. With much efforts he finally manages to bring the fawn back home.
8.) Jody was filled with emotion after he found the fawn. Can you find at least three words or phrases which show how he felt?
Answer: Jody was over the moon when he finally found the fawn. The touch made him delirious, He was light-headed with his joy and It seemed to Penny that the boy’s eyes were as bright as the fawn’s these lines are clear evidence how deeply Jody felt when he found the fawn.
9.) How did the deer drink milk from the gourd?
Answer: Jody poured fresh milk into a small gourd and let the fawn drink it and butted suddenly. As the fawn could not make nothing of the milk in the gourd ,Jody dipped his fingers in the milk and thrust them into the fawn’s wet mouth. Jody’s tender love for the fawn can be seen here.
10.) Why didn’t the fawn follow Jody up the steps as he had thought it would?
Answer: Unlike human beings the fawn was not used of climbing the steps so Jody had to carry it.

1.) Why did Penny Baxter allow Jody to go find the fawn and raise it?
Answer: Penny’s life was saved by the fawn’s mother –doe. This incident had a deep sense of guilt in the heart of Penny and Jody. Jody didn’t want to leave the fawn alone and die of starvation and he believed that the fawn didn’t deserve this kind of life. This thinking of Jody impressed Penny and let him find the fawn and raise it.
2.) What did Doc Wilson mean when he said, “Nothing in the world ever comes quite free”?
Answer: When Doc Wilson came to know about the entire incident and Jody’s decision of finding the fawn and raising it he says-‘’Nothing in the world ever come quite free’’ because the fawn’s life was lonely because of the death of its mother and now it was Penny’s turn to repay it.
3.) How did Jody look after the fawn, after he accepted the responsibility for doing this?
Answer: Jody was a sensitive boy who knew he should do something for the fawn. When he finally finds the fawn he gently carries him to the home. When he comes to know that he cannot climbs steps he carries him. And he dips his fingers in the milk and thrust him. He is very gentle with the fawn this shows how caring Jody was while taking the responsibility of the fawn.
4.) How does Jody’s mother react when she hears that he is going to bring the fawn home? Why does she react in this way?
Answer: Initially Jody’s mother was not in the favour of having the animals at home. She was shocked to know what Jody was upto.

Answer: Jody asked Mill-wheel if he thought the fawn was still there.
(iv) He asked Mill-wheel, “Will you help me find him?”
Answer: Jody asked Mill-wheel if he would help him find the fawn.
(v) He said, “Was it up here that Pa got bitten by the snake?”
Answer: He (Jody) asked if it was up there that Pa got bitten by the snake.
