NCERT Solutions Class 7 Civics Chapter 6 – Understanding Media
1.) In what ways does the media play an important role in a democracy?
Ans- In a democracy, the media plays a very important role in providing news and discussing events taking place in the country and the world.
a) Media gives us an idea about how the government works.
b) Gives information about international affairs and policies.
c) It provides information and helps in forming public opinions.
d) It has the power to organise public protest, starting a signature campaign, asking the government to rethink its programmes etc.
2.) Can you give this diagram a title? What do you understand about the link between media and big business from this diagram?
Ans- The title could be Influential Media.
These houses place advertisements on various media like newspaper, radio & television to promote their products. These ads influence the people to buy products seen in the media. As a result money flows back to big business houses. They even have some Medias under their control which promotes only their products.
3.) You have read about the ways in which the media ‘sets the agenda’. What kind of effect does this have in a democracy? Provide two examples to support your point of view.
Ans- The media plays an important role in deciding what stories to focus on and what is newsworthy. It has both positive and negative effects like the media has drew our attention to alarming levels of pesticides in cola drinks. They published reports that indicated the high level of pesticides and, thus, made us aware. But there are several instances when the media fails to focus on issues that are significant in our lives. For example, drinking water is a major problem in the country and we don’t see much coverage on these issues.
Nowadays, media’s close relationship with business comes in their way to provide a balanced report.
