# NCERT Class 6 Mathematics First Chapter Knowing Our Numbers Exercise 1.3 Solution

## EXERCISE 1.3

(1) Estimate each of the following using general rule:

(a) 730 + 998 = 1728 = 1700

(b) 796 – 314 = 482 = 500

(c) 12,904 +2,888 = 15792 = 16,000

(d) 28,292 – 21,496 = 6796 = 7,000

(2) Give a rough estimate (by rounding off to nearest hundreds) and also a closer estimate (by rounding off to nearest tens):

(a) 439 + 334 + 4,317 = 5090 = By nearest hundred 5000 and by nearest ten 5090

(b) 1,08,734 – 47,599 = 61135 = By nearest hundred 61,100 and by nearest ten 61,130

(c) 8325 – 491 = 7834 = By nearest hundred 7,800 and by nearest ten 7,840

(d) 4,89,348 – 48,365 = 440983 = By nearest hundred 4,40,900 and by nearest ten 4,40,980

(3) Estimate the following products using general rule:

(a) 578 × 161

Solution: If we approximate 578 to the nearest hundreds, we get 600 and then approximate 161 to nearest hundreds, we get 200 and 600 × 200 = 1,20,000

(b) 5281 × 3491

Solution: If we approximate 5281 to the nearest thousands, we get 5000 and then approximate 3491 to nearest hundreds, we get 3500 and 5000 × 3500 = 1,75, 00, 000

(c) 1291 × 592

Solution: If we approximate 1291 to the nearest hundreds, we get 1300 and then approximate 592 to nearest hundreds, we get 600 and 1300 × 600 = 7,80,000

(d) 9250 × 29

Solution: If we approximate 9250 to the nearest thousands, we get 10,000 and then approximate 29 to nearest tens, we get 30 and 10,000 × 30 = 3,00,0 00
