a) What is meant by agriculture ?
Agriculture is a process which involves cultivation of crops, reading of livestock, fisheries etc.
b) Name the crop which needs about 210 frost-free days for it’s growth.
Cotton requires about 210 frost free days for it’s growth.
c) What are the major types of farming of the world ?
The two major types of farming of the world are: Subsistence farming and Commercial farming.
Q2. Answer the following in 40 words each:-
a) Name the three categories of crops.
Crops are those plants that are cultivated for human consumption. The major types of crops produced are:
i) Food crops- These are for direct consumption of the consumer, it includes wheat, rice, millet etc.
ii) Beverage crops- They are also for consumption of the consumers, these include tea, coffee etc.
iii) Fibre crops- They are grown for obtaining the fibre, which is used for various purposes. Like jute, cotton etc.
b) What are the physical conditions required for the cultivation of rice?
Rice grows luxuriantly in areas where the temperature is high and over 20°C and the annual rainfall is about 100-200 cm. It grows well in alluvial soil which has rich clay content. It’s majorly grown in deltas, river valleys and coastal plains. Rice also requires stagnant water for better growth and development.
c) What is meant by agricultural development ?
Agricultural development refers to the efforts that are taken to increase the production in agricultural sector in order to meet the needs of the population. This agricultural development can take place in two ways: Mechanisation- wherein, machines such as harvesters, threshers are used for efficiency.
Higher production – By using high yielding variety(HYV) seeds, pesticides, herbicides etc.
d) Give two points of difference between intensive and extensive farming.
Two points of difference between intensive farming and extensive farming are as follows:-
(i) Intensive farming uses a lot of labour and capital as compared to the area of land.
Extensive farming on the other hand, is less expansive and covers a greater area of land
(ii) Intensive farming is done for densely populated areas.
Whereas, extensive farming is practiced in moderately populated region.
