c) Why do the Tropical Evergreen forests have luxuriant growth of vegetation?
The Tropical Evergreen forests, located in the equatorial and tropical regions, experience heavy rainfall and high temperatures, helping the luxuriant growth of vegetation.
d) What are mineral resources?
A mineral is a substancenaturally occurring in nature, whose chemical composition of atom structure is formed by inorganic process. They have inorganic crystal structures and are mostly solid.
Q2. Answer the following questions in about 40 words each:-
a) How can soil be conserved?
Soil conservation refers to protecting soil from chemicals and other physical damages that may reduce it’s usefulness. It is important for various reasons, agriculture is one of them. Some of the methods to conserve soil are:
i) Contour ploughing. iv) Afforestation
ii) Crop rotation. v) Strip cropping
iii) Terrace farming
b) What is the importance of forests to man and the environment?
Forests are a crucial resource to humans as well as the environment. On the surface level, forests provide us with food, other extremely important elements which are primary for production of goods. They prevent soil erosions, provide oxygen for the survival of humans and other organisms. The rapid clearing of forests is leading to various problems on the planet, thus conserving them or afforestation is very much needed.
c) Why is iron considered the most important mineral?
Iron is considered to be the most important mineral because it acts as a backbone to industries. It is used for producing machines that will later produce- tools, vehicles, machines etc. There are four types of iron ores, namely, magnetite, haematite, limonite and siderite. Magnetite is the best quality of iron ore as it has high iron content in it. Thus, iron is a crucial element in the production sector.
d) Why are coal, mineral oil and natural gas called fossil fuels?
Coal, mineral oil and natural gas are grouped under fossil fuels because they were formed by plants and animals that were buried under the surface of Earth millions years ago. They are extracted from under ground and are depleting in nature and take millions of years to form. They are organic in nature. Most of the energy consumed today is produced by coal, mineral oil and natural gas.
e) Explain the factors that influence in soil formation.
The factors of soil formation are nature of parent rock, topography, climate, organism contained in the soil and time. The parent rock determines the basic characteristics of soil. Topography affects the accumulation of soils. Accumulation of weathered rocks is not possible on a steep slope, it is moved by gravity.Formation of soil is closely related with climatic factors such as temperature and precipitation. Dead plants and animals also provide humus to the soil. Organisms such as earthworms are also helpful for creating air pockets for passage of water and wind . Time factor also plays an important role, as it determines the formation of deeper layers of soil. It a slow process overall and takes hundreds of years to form.
Q3. Choose the correct answer:
(i)- (c)
(ii) – (b)
(iii) –(b)
