THE NECKLACE (PART I)
Answer the following questions:
1.) Why was Mathilde married to a minor official?
Ans. Mathilde was a pretty girl but by the error of fate, she was born into a family of clerks so she married to a minor official.
2.) Why did Mathilde weep with misery after visiting her schoolmate?
Ans. Mathilde wept with regret, despair and misery to see the richness of her former schoolmate and compared to her, she did not get any luxuries.
3.) What did the envelop hold?
Ans. The envelop held an invitation to attend an evening party at the Ministry.
4.) Was the husband a considerate person? How did we know that?
Ans. Her husband was a considerate person, we know this as in the story we have seen that how he was saving money to buy a gun for hunting, but he agreed to get a dress for Mathilde for the party, with that exact same amount, he was willing buy a gun with.
5.) Why did Mathilde go to her friend’s house and tell her of her distress?
Ans. Mathilde went to her friend’s house to tell her friend her own distress of not having a jewel to wear for the ball party, so that her friend could lend her some jewel to wear.
6.) What did Mrs. Forestier’s large box contain?
Ans. The box contained bracelets, a pearl necklace and a diamond necklace in black satin box.
7.) Which sentence tells that Mathilde greatly desired the necklace?
Ans. “After seeing the necklace her heart began to beat with uncontrolled desire. She fastened it around her neck and stood lost in ecstasy.”
8.) Try to express the thoughts that must have passed through Mathilde’s mind on seeing the necklace, in her own words.
Ans. The thoughts that might have passed through Mathilde’s mind, when she saw the necklace were, “oh! How beautiful I’ll look after wearing this necklace, I’ll be the center of attraction in the party.”
9.) Why did Mathilde not notice the loss of her necklace earlier?
Ans. Mathilde did not notice the loss of her necklace in the ball party because she was over enthralled and enchanted in the ball party cause of the admiration she was getting in the party. She was so lost with everything happening in the party that she forgot about the borrowed necklace.
THE NECKLACE (PART II)
Answer the following questions:
1) What efforts did Loisel make to find the necklace?
Ans. They looked among the folds of Mathilde’s dress, her skirt, clock and everywhere possible, they even went to the police, to the newspaper to offer a reward, everywhere the tiniest glimmer of hope led him.
2) What is implied in “a hollow pale figure”?
Ans. It means that the person referred above has lost all the hopes of finding the necklace.
3) What was the arrangement with the jeweler? Do you think it was fair?
Ans. The Loisel’s made an arrangement with the jeweler that if they found out the original necklace before February; the jeweler will take back the necklace made by him for thirty-four thousand francs. I think they made quite a fair deal.
4) Why did Madame Frostier speak coldly to Mathilde?
Ans. Mathilde was very late in returning the necklace. Madame Frostier felt that she should have returned the necklace sooner as Mathilde borrowed it just for a day.
5) What is meant by ‘the horrible life of the very poor’?
Ans. The line means the poor lifestyle led by the poor people to make their ends meet. They work extremely hard even to get the basic amenities.
6) What contrast is implied by the use of the word ‘still young, still beautiful, still charming’?
Ans. Mathilde was now living a life in sheer poverty as all their hard earned money was gone in replacing the diamond necklace that she lost, with this life, she lost all her charm and beauty. On the other hand Madame Frostier, who was still rich, and was living a luxurious life looked beautiful, young and charming as before.
7) Why did Mathilde decide to talk to her friend?
Ans. Mathilde and her husband were now debt-free and she somehow felt her friend responsible for whatever happened in her life, so she decided to talk to Madame Frostier finally and tell her the whole incident.
8) Who do you think was responsible for Mathilde’s misery? Was it her friend, she herself, her husband or the circumstances?
Ans. I think Mathilde herself was responsible for herlife’s misery and upto some extent, the circumstances as well.

2.) Write what you think about the following thoughts and actions of Mathilde:
a.) Mathilde despaired about the loss of her necklace.
Ans. It was an obvious reaction as she has lost a valuable diamond necklace, that too which was borrowed.
b.) Mathilde wrote a note to her friend as directed by her husband.
Ans. She wrote a note to her friend telling her that she’ll be a bit late in returning the necklace. She had no other way left expect doing what her supporting husband had to say.
c.) Mathilde and her husband thought of replacing the necklace.
Ans. That was the only step left, as it was a costly necklace that she borrowed from her friend.
d.) Mathilde returned the necklace to her friend.
Ans. She had to return the necklace, after all it was borrowed. Atleast she was honest enough to return it to her friend, whatever the circumstances she went through.
e.) Mathilde did not tell her friend about the loss and replacement.
Ans. Might beMathilde was not confident enough to disclose the truth to her friend and also she did not want her friend to know about her carelessness.
f.) Mathilde worked very very hard to pay the debt.
Ans. Mathilde knew it was all her fault and mistake because of which she lost the necklace, so she had to replace it any how and so she did.
g.) Mathilde and her husband paid off the debts in ten years.
Ans. The compensation amount was very big and they were not very rich, so it took them ten long years to pay off their debts.
h.) Mathilde told her friend about the lost necklace.
Ans. Almost ten years had passed and now Mathilde had already paid all the debts. When she saw Madame Forestier after all these years, still young and beautiful, she felt very emotional and thought of telling the truth behind the lost necklace and how she replaced it.
Discuss the following and write about each in your own words in 5-6 lines:
a.) What would you do if something like this happens to you?
Ans. I would have went to my friend and told her the truth and would have asked her to give me some time and assure her that I will surely return the lost necklace, as it was my fault.
b.) What opinion do you form about Mathilde’s husband from the story?
Ans. Her husband was a very understanding and supporting person. Even when she lost the necklace, he assured her that they together will find out some way and replace it , And it is also clear that he loved Mathilde dearly.
c.) Which events in the story (Part 1 & 2) changed Mathilde’s life?
Ans. PART 1- Mathilde’s life changed after getting the invitation from the ministry and when she borrowed the necklace from her friend. But losing the necklace drastically changed her life.
PART 2- Replacing the necklace and paying off the debts for all those ten years, changed her life a lot, she and her husband went through a lot while paying off the huge debt.
