Conjunction is referred to linking words which connect two different words, clauses, phrases and sentences together into a single form. People need to use conjunctions in the speaking writing both for putting complex thoughts in easier way. Conjunctions are just single words but their functions are important to complete the meaning in a sentence. Conjunctions are used in written text for making more complex sentences with other words or group of words. Kinds of Conjunctions
The main three kinds of conjunctions that are commonly used in sentences and texts are subordinating conjunctions, coordinating conjunctions and correlative conjunctions. Students will find definite conjunctions included in each group with its own features and rules of using in a text.
1.) Subordinating conjunctions – Definition with Examples in Sentence:
Subordinating conjunctions are also called binders which joins main clause to subordinate clauses. Subordinate clause cannot be used independently as main clause can be used. To complete the subordinate clauses we have to include more information about it which is done by adding it with main clauses through conjunctions. So, we can say that subordinating conjunctions are used for showing relation between main clause and dependant clauses. Besides that we can explain cause and effects, show any ideas or contrasts by connecting two clauses with certain conjunctions. Subordinating conjunctions can be placed at the beginning when a dependent clause starts the sentence. Using rules of all subordinating conjunctions are given below:
i) Conjunction of time:
Before, after, till, until, while, when, since, as etc.

He reached the station when the train left.
ii) Conjunction of reason:
As, so, because, therefore, since, thus etc.

He cannot walk because he is ill.
Since it is raining I will not go out.
iii) Conjunction of action:
That, so that, in order that, lest etc.
Ex.
We eat in order that we stay healthy.
She cooked food so that we get food on time.
iv) Conjunction of condition:
If, as if, whether or not, in case etc.
He speaks in a way as if he knows about all.
v) Conjunction of manner:
As, as though, as if etc.

He behaves as if he is my best friend.
2.) Coordinating conjunctions – Definition with Examples in Sentence:
Coordinating conjunctions are not only bound to clauses but they connect words, phrases, sentences and clauses having equal and contrasting grammatical senses. For that purpose these conjunctions are also called coordinators. The different types of coordinating conjunctions are given below:
i) Conjunction of addition:
As well as, both and, not only but also, as well as etc.
Ex.
He as well as his group members are working hard for this project.
ii) Conjunctions of choices:
Or, otherwise, either or, neither nor etc.

He decided to go either nainital or Kashmir.
iii) Conjunction of ideas:
But, yet, still, however etc.
He wrote well in exam still he got less marks.
iv) Conjunction of inference:
So, for, therefore, consequently etc.
Ex.
He did not plan well so he failed.
3.) Correlative conjunctions – Definition with Examples in Sentence:
Correlative conjunctions are used in pairs for connecting two equal classes or words or parts of sentences. We have to make sure that correlative conjunctions function properly to introduce both terms in a sentence. It always follows equal sentence parts for each pair of conjunction. The list of common correlative conjunctions is given below:
Ex.
Either or, neither nor, both and, not only but also, so that, so as, such as, other than, same as, else but, scarcely when, hardly when, no sooner than etc.
No sooner did he reach than the train left the station.
He should study either science or mathematics now.
