Answer: At the beginning of the story, the girl was walking along the lonely deserted road.
2.) Why did the girl not want to go home?
Answer: The girl’s father had asked to sell the matchbox and bring home the money. But the girl couldn’t sell the matchbox and didn’t have the money. Returning home would mean that her father would beat her, so she didn’t want to go home.
3.) What did the grandmother do to the child?
Answer: The grandmother took the child in her arms and carried her in heavens.
4.) What could the passersby see after the incident?
Answer: The passerby saw the frozen girl lying in the snow with a pretty smile on her lips. Her burnt matches lay scattered all around her.

Answer: The children were fed in a large, stone hall, with a big, metal basin at one end. The master
stood by the basin and served each child with a small bowl of watery gruel.
2.) Why was ‘a council’ held by the boys? What did they decide in it?
Answer: The boys in the house were not given enough food and they would always feel hungry. One evening, one of the bigger boys stated quite clearly that unless he had an extra bowl of gruel, he would most certainly eat the boy who slept next to him. The smaller boys believed him. To solve this problem, a council was held. In this council, it was decided that Oliver Twist should walk up to the master after supper and to ask for more gruel.
3.) What did Oliver ask his master for?
Answer: Oliver asked his master to give him some more gruel.
4.) How did the master react to the request of Oliver?
Answer: The master couldn’t believe what Oliver had asked for.
5.) What was the punishment that Oliver got for ‘asking for more’?
Answer: As a punishment, Oliver was locked in a room to spend the night alone.
6.) What did Mr. Bumble ultimately decide to do with Oliver?
Answer: Mr. Bumble decided to send Oliver out of the poorhouse. He offered a reward of five pounds to any man or woman who would take Oliver away from the poorhouse.

Answer: Oliver Twist was born in the poorhouse of a little country town on a cold, black night in the
winter of 1837. At the time of his birth, there was a doctor and an old pauper woman. His mother died as soon as he was born. He was born in such tragic circumstances.
2.) How can you say that Oliver’s mother was a poor woman?
Answer: Oliver’s mother was a young and good-looking woman. She had been found lying in the street of the town. Her shoes were torn to pieces and this gives us the idea that she was a poor woman.
3.) What kind of a man was Mr. Bumble?
Answer: Mr. Bumble was an unkind man who ill-treated the children. He starved the children. He thought of himself as a great man but in reality he was a cruel man who didn’t love to the children.
4.) Why were the boys always hungry?
Answer: The boys were never given enough food. They had bigger appetite and would never be satisfied with whatever they go.
5.) How did the children plan to satisfy their hunger?
Answer: the children planned to go to their master and ask for more gruel to satisfy their hunger.
6.) What was the result of Oliver’s request for more food?
Answer: When Oliver requested for more food, he got a severe punishment from Mr. Bumble. Mr. Bumble locked him in a room and Oliver had to spend whole night in that room.
7.) Why did Mr. Bumble get a notice pasted outside the gate? Explain.
Answer: Oliver’s request was not accepted by the master and as a punishment; he was locked in a room for a whole night. Mr. Bumble thought that asking for more is a crime and others too would do the same. To get rid of Oliver permanently, he put a notice outside the gate.
8.) Sum up Oliver’s birth and his life in the Poorhouse.
Answer: Oliver Twist was born in the poorhouse of a little country town on a cold, black night in the
winter of 1837. At the time of his birth, there was a doctor and an old pauper woman. His mother died as soon as he was born. He was born in such tragic circumstances. He was then taken to the poor house by the town beadle, Mr. Bumble. The life of Oliver in the poorhouse was sad. He was ill-treated and not given enough food. He became pale and thin in the poorhouse. He craved for love and kindness in that house.
9.) Briefly narrate the events that led to Oliver being locked up in a room.
Answer: One evening at the time of supper, one of the biggest boys announced that he would eat the boy who slept next time if he was not given extra bowl of gruel. The smaller boys believed him. It was decided that Oliver Twist would go to their master and ask for some more gruel. When Mr. Bumble got to know about this, he locked him in a room. Mr. Bumble thought that asking for some more gruel was a crime, so he punished him.
