C.1) Discuss the following questions in small groups and present your answers to the class :
1.) How did the proud man react to the poet’s sorrow?
Answer: The proud man reacted in a cold manner to the poet’s sorrow. He gave him gold but not a kindly word.
2.) What do you mean by ‘his looks were cold’?
Answer: The above words mean that the man was least affected by the poet’s sorrows and didn’t sympathized with the poet.
3.) In spite of having gold, the poor man was not happy. Why?
Answer: The poet wanted to have kind words and not gold. So he was not happy about it.
4.) The poet paid back the proud man. What does this tell you about the poet’s character?
Answer: The poet had deep self-respect and he paid him back.
5.) State any two ways by which the poor man expressed his sympathy.
- He bound my head. He gave me bread. The poor man helped the poet by giving him bread.
- He watched me night and day. The poor man took care of the poet day and night.
6.) What, according to the poet, is greater than gold?
Answer: According to the poet, heavenly sympathy is greater than gold.
7.) Explain the last two lines of the poem.
Answer: Many people might feel that gold is greater but in real sense it the feeling of sympathy that is far greater than the gold. The feeling of understanding’s others’ pain is the quality which is superior than any other thing in the world.
8.) In not more than 50 words, describe a situation when someone was kind to you.
Answer: One day when I was going to school on my bicycle, I fell into a ditch and hurt myself badly. There was one kind and helpful man who came and helped me. He gave me water and dropped me home safely. I cannot thank him enough because of his kind act.
C2.) Given below is a summary of the poem. Complete it by writing the missing word / words.
Once I was very sad. A proud man saw my grief. He gave me some money, but did not say even a single word of kindness. When my sorrow was over, I went to him, gave back his money and thanked him. After sometime, I was again in trouble. A poor man passed by me. He bandaged my head. He gave me bread and looked after me day and night. I feel I won’t be able to repay him because heavenly sympathy is more precious than gold.
