II.) COMPREHENSION QUESTIONS :
A.) Answer briefly the following questions.
1.) Who was Lochinvar? Why did he ride to Netherby Hall?
Answer: Lochinvar was a fearless young knight. He was in love with Ellen. Ellen was getting married to someone else at Nertherby Hall so Lochnivar went there to take her with him.
2.) What qualities of Lochinvar are highlighted in the first stanza?
Answer: Lochinvar’s courage and true love are highlighted in the first stanza. He came unarmed and his only weapon was hi broadsword.
3.) Lochinvar rode the horse passionately to meet Ellen. What actions in lines 7 and 8 reveal his hurried movements?
Answer: He staid not for brake, and he stopp’d not for stone,
He swam the Eske river where ford there was none;
4.) What qualities of the bridegroom are listed in stanza 2?
Answer: The bridegroom was timid and couldn’t express his love. He was fearful to have any competition with Lochinvar.
5.) What evidence is there in stanza 3 to show that the bridegroom was a coward?
Answer: Then spoke the bride’s father, his hand on his sword
(For the poor craven bridegroom said never a word).
The above lines show that the bride’s father talked to Lonhinvar keeping hand on his sword because the bridegroom was too coward to say anything.
6.) How did the bride’s father receive Lochinvar? And what did he ask him?
Answer: Bride’s father received Lochinvar by keeping his hand on his sword and asked him whether he had come in peace or in war to the hall or to dance at the bridal.
7.) What answer did Lochinvar give the bride’s father?
Answer: Lochinvar said to the bride’s father that long ago he had asked permission to marry Ellen. His proposal was rejected by Ellen’s father and this is why she was getting married some coward man. Lonchinvar said that he had come just to have one last dance with her and drink just one cup of wine with her.
8.) What quality of love is highlighted by Lochinvar when he says,
a.) “Love swells like the Solway, but ebbs like its tide?”
Answer: Lonhinvar said that his love for Ellen was like that of waves of Solway which was powerful. But yet he had to ebb or move away because of Ellen’s father denial of his love.
b.) Does this truly reflect Lochinvar’s love for Ellen?
Answer: No, it hides his true love for Ellen.
c.) If not, why does Lochinvar tell him what is not true?
Answer: Lochnivar was quite smart man. The bride’s father is surrounded by his brothers, kinsmen and other people. So Lochnivar doesn’t want to reveal his real intention of taking Ellen with her. He doesn’t want to risk and chance of getting attacked so waits for the right moment to give signal to Ellen so that they could elope.
9.) What other lies does Lochinvar tell Ellen’s father?
Answer: Lochinvar tells that he had come just to have one last drink with Ellen and dance with her. He also says that there are many other maidens in Scotland who are lovelier than Ellen and who would be glad to be his wife.
10.) How did Ellen express her love towards Lochinvar?
Answer: Ellen kissed the goblet which Lonchinvar took up. When he drank the wine, he threw down the cup and Ellen looked down to blush and looked up to sight with a smile on her lips and a tear in her eye.
11.) What was the impression of the bride-maidens about the pair- Lochinvar and Ellen?
Answer: When Lochinvar and Ellen danced together gracefully, the bride-maiden whispered to each other that it would have been better if their cousin Ellen was matched with Lochinvar.
12.) What mixed feelings are brought out in stanza 5?
Answer: Ellen is happy to see her lover and love her so passionately. But on the other hand, she is upset with the fact she has to marry someone else.

Answer: When Lochinvar danced together, they came near the door. He touched Ellen’s hand and whispered one word in her ear. He signaled her to be ready to elope.

a.) What is Solway?
Answer: Solway is the river that separates England from Scotland. Spring-tides in the river Solway are believed to be specially powerful
b.) Who does Lochinvar speak this line to?
Answer: Lochinvar speaks this line to Ellen’s father.
c.) What is the figure of speech used here?
Answer: Personification
d.) Explain the figure of speech.
Answer: Lonchinvar says that his love for Ellen is like Solway, which is great and powerful. But when his love was denied, it dried out.

a.) What did the bride’s father speak?
Answer: The bride’s father had once denied the love of Lonchinvar. So, when he came at Ellen’s wedding, he questioned about his intention. He questioned him because the bridegroom was coward to ask any question.
b.) Why did he keep his hand on his sword?
Answer: If Lochinvar had revealed his real intention of taking Ellen away with her then, then Ellen’s father would have attacked or killed him.
c.) Why didn’t the bridegroom say even a word?
Answer: The bridegroom was too fearful to say anything. He was a coward.
III.) PARAGRAPH WRITING:
Discuss in pairs/groups of four each the answers to the following questions. Note down the important points for each question and then develop the points into one-paragraph answers.
1.) Pick out all the details from the poem which help Lochinvar to hide his real intentions.
Answer: Lochinvar went unared to the Nether by Hall. He didn’t want to reveal his intention. When Ellen’s father asked about his intention of attending his daughter’s wedding, Lochinvar told him that he had came just to have a cup of wine with Ellen and dance with her. He told Ellen’s father that his swollen love like Solway was much ebbed due to his denial of his marriage proposal. He no longer loved Ellen and there were many lovely Scotland maidens who were beautiful than Ellen and who were ready to be his wife.
2) How did Lochinvar finally win Ellen for himself?
Answer: Lochinvar assured Ellen’s father that he had just come to dance with Ellen for the last time. He assured that there would be no war. He took Ellen and danced with her and took her to the door. He whispered in her ears and in no time eloped with her. He went at such speed that no one was able to catch them. In this way, Lochinvar with his wit and courageous attitude, win Ellen.
3.) “Only the brave deserve the fair.” Justify the statement with reference to the poem.
Answer: Lochinvar was a passionate lover and a fearless knight. He went to attend his beloved’s wedding. Ellen’s groom was a coward man who didn’t deserve her. He went unarmed and without any weapon at the wedding. He used only wit and smartness to elope with Ellen. He very smartly tricked Ellen’s father that he had just come to have a cup of wine and dance with Ellen. He assured that he was at peace. Then he danced with Ellen and took her to the door and ran in sucha way that no one was able to catch them.This shows fearless and daring attitude of Lonchinvar which made him win his beloved.
