6.) There are two examples of paradox in the last two lines. (A paradox is a statement containing opposite ideas.)

i) What opposite ideas are suggested in “things standing shall fall?”

Answer: “Things standing shall fall” can be depicted and interpreted in different ways. The poet is poor and unable to build temple which emphasizes that the building can be subject of destruction after a period of time. In other way, the above phrase can also emphasize that those who are high in arrogance stands straight in front of the God. His arrogance doesn’t allow him to bow in front of the God. Static objects are also subject to destruction. When the heart is filled with pure devotion one becomes blessed and immortal.

ii) What opposite ideas are suggested in “the moving shall eve stay?”

Answer: Firstly, the moving shall eve stay can suggest that the pure devotion in the human’s heart cannot be destroyed by external force. Also those who are humble bow their heads down in front of the God unlike those arrogant people who stand erect and not bow down even in front of the God.

7.) What final message do the last two lines convey?

Answer: The final message the poet wants to give is that his moving temple which he has in his heart will never be destroyed by any external force. Unlike other temple building, which might be destroyed one day, but the movie temple in his will never be ruined. Another message he wants to give is that those who bow in front of the God will never fall. Whereas those stand erect and doesn’t bow in front of the God will fall because of his arrogance. The poet consoles himself that though he is poor and cannot build a temple, but the pure devotion he has in his heart is something worthy.

B.) Close Study

Read the following extract carefully. Discuss in pairs and then write the answers to the questions given below it.

My legs are pillars,

the body the shrine,

the head a cupola of gold.

1.) How is the human body compared to a temple?

Answer: The whole body is compared to a temple. The legs are compared to pillars, the body the shrine with the idol of the God in the heart and the head, a cupola of gold with serene thoughts protecting the God in his heart.

2.) What is the figure of speech used here?

Answer: Metaphor

3.) Why is the speaker comparing the human body to a temple?

Answer:  The poor poet had a desire to build a temple. But since he cannot afford to build one, he considers his body as a temple. He keeps God in his heart at secured place. He also believes that by having god in his heart and making his body as temple, there would not be any destruction. For building which is once built can be destroyed one day, but the temple which is built in the body cannot be destroyed.

III.) PARAGRAPH WRITING :

Discuss in pairs / groups of four each and answer the following question. Note down the important points and then develop the points into a paragraph.

1.) What ideas of spirituality emerge from the study of this well-known Vachana?

Answer: Through this poem, the poet wants to preach the message of spirituality. A poor man had a wish to build a temple, but he couldn’t afford to do so. So he decides to treat his body as a temple. He considers his legs as pillars, his body for a shrine. He kept the God in the centre, i.e in the heart. According to him with pure and deep devotion, one can be one’s own temple. He feels the build may get destroyed one day but his inner temple won’t be destroyed. Those who stand erect and don’t bow even in front of the God will fall some day, but those who bow down in front of the God will never fail. To the poet, the pure devotion lies in one’s heart and not in any building or statue.
