Karnataka 1st PUC Geography Question Bank Chapter 7 – Biosphere Solution
- State – Karnataka.
- Class – 1st PUC / Class 11
- Subject – Geography.
- Topic – Solution / Notes.
- Chapter – 7
- Chapter Name – Biosphere.
- Subpart – Environment, Ecology, Biomes, Biodiversity.
(I) Answer the following in a word or a sentence each.
(1) Why is the Earth called ‘Living Planet”?
Answer :
Earth is called living planet because it is the home for various living organisms
(2) What is Environment?
Answer :
Environment is all the surrounding atmosphere of an organism. It consists of both biotic and abiotic components.
(3) Define Ecology.
Answer :
Ecology is the relationship between the living organism with their surrounding environment.
(4) What is Biomes?
Answer :
Biomes are distinct group of life forms and their environment in which they are found.
(5) Define the term Biodiversity.
Answer :
Biodiversity is the variety of flora fauna found within a geographical area.
(II) Answer the following in two or three sentences each.
(1) What are the components of Biosphere?
Answer :
Biosphere is the home to various forms of life. It is also known as living planet. All the life forms exists in the contact zone between lithosphere, hydrosphere and the atmosphere. And the interaction between all these three components is called as biosphere. Lithosphere is land, atmosphere is air and hydrosphere is water.
(2) Name the two types of Environment.
Answer :
Environment is the sum of all the surroundings in which an organism exists. It is basically divided into two types- Physical environment and Cultural environment. Where physical environment is created by biotic things and cultural environment is created by human beings and their living conditions.
(3) What is ‘Ecological balance’?
Answer :
The Ecological balance theory states that the ecological systems usually exist in the state of equilibrium. That if a small change happens in any of the parameters it is corrected by some other negative change to bring things back into original equilibrium.
(4) Mention any four types of biomes.
Answer :
6 major biomes are found in the world- Forest biome, savanna biome, grassland biome, desert biome, tundra biome and aquatic biome.
(5) State the features of Genetic biodiversity.
Answer :
Genetic biodiversity is referred to as the diversity found at the genetic level. As gene is the building blocks of various forms of life and in human beings’ diversity exists in the form of height, colour, hair, physical appearance etc.
(III) Answer the following.
(1) Briefly explain the Biomes.
Answer :
Biome is a combination of the organism and their environment. In simpler words biome is a plant and animal community which covers a large geographical area. Climate determines the boundaries of various biomes like temperature, humidity, rainfall etc. Biomes are classified into 6 categories based on the dominant life form present-
- Forest biome– Trees are the dominant life form present here. Equatorial region is dominant with forest biome.
- Savanna biome– It is an ecotone region between forest biome and desert biome. It is characterized by grass cover and low or seasonal rainfall.
- Grasslandbiome– Grasses are the dominant vegetation found here. It is found in moderate soil water deficit regions, semi-arid areas, sub-tropical and mid latitude regions.
- Desert biomes– It is characterized by xerophytic plants and severe water deficit conditions.
- Tundra biomes– They are usually found in the low temperature and high latitude areas; it has plants which grow quickly during short warm to cool summer season.
- Aquatic biomes– It includes ponds, lakes, rivers, wetlands, and oceans.
(2) Describe the main aspects and three levels of study of Biodiversity.
Answer :
Biodiversity is the diversity of flora and fauna found in a certain geographical area. It has 5 main aspects-
- Distribution of different kinds of ecosystems.
- The total number of species in the region.
- Number of endemic species in the region
- Genetic diversity in an individual species.
- The sub-population of an individual species which shows genetic diversity.
Biodiversity is studied at three different levels-
- Genetic diversity- Variations at the level of genes. Genes are the building blocks of human life and among human beings’ diversity exists in the form of height, hair colour, colour, physical appearance etc.
- Species diversity- Diversity at the level of species i.e. the number of species occupying a certain geographical area. Some biodiversity rich areas are called as hotspots.
● Ecosystem biodiversity- Ecosystem also has diversity in the form of its types, habitats, and ecological processes within them.
