(1) What had King John heard about the Abbot of Canterbury?
Ans :- King John heard about the Abbot of Canterbury that he had been living a better life than the King. He heard that the Abbot used to dine with a hundred noble men and fifty brave knights waited upon him at his table.
(2) What were the three questions that King John asked the Abbot to answer?
Ans :- The three questions that King John asked the Abbot to answer were –
(i) how long shall he live?
(ii) how soon shall he ride round the whole world? and
(iii) what he thinks?
(3) Why did the King ask such foolish questions?
Ans :- The king was jealous of the Abbot’s wealthy life and he wanted to usurp all the wealth from the Abbot. So the king asked such foolish questions because he thought that the Abbot will be unable to answer these questions and he will succeed in his plan.
(4) Was the Abbot able to answer the questions? Which places did he visit?
Ans :- The Abbot was unable to answer the questions so he asked for two weeks from the king to find the answers.
He visited to the famous universities of England, the Oxford and the Cambridge to find the answers.
(5) Who answered the King’s questions? What were the three answers?
Ans :- The Abbot’s shepherd in the disguise of his master went to the court of King John and answered his questions.
The three answers were –
(i) The King shall live until the day that he dies and not one day longer and he shall die until his last breath and not one moment before.
(ii) The king shall ride round the world in twenty-four hours if he rises with the sun and continues to ride with the sun until it rises again in the morning.
(iii) The king thought that he was the Abbot but actually he was the Abbot’s shepherd.
