The environmental performance index comprises of several environmental related evaluation of a country. Several factors like air quality, water and sanitation, state of forest and Bio-diversity, renewable energy sources, etc. are taken into consideration while evaluating the performance index of a country.
India is being ranked at 177 due to several following reasons.
Bad quality of air- The quality of air specially in the capital city of India I.e. Delhi is been deteriorating, specially in the winter months , where people find it very difficult to breathe and see the roads clearly due to rise in smog all over the city. This makes Delhi as one of the cities with very bad air quality. The rise in vehicular traffic and other industrial pollutants makes it even worse, thereby reducing the environmental performance ranking.
Water supply and sanitation- In India although several efforts have been made by the Government to provide drinking water , and other water and sanitation facilities, yet most of the states still face water shortages and proper sanitation facilities. Some are not yet been educated about the use of these sanitation facilities. Most of the villages and cities are still not able to get clean drinking water facilities. This again brings down the performance ranking of the country.
Garbage and waste disposal- The government of India had introduced door to door collection of garbage and other waste management technique. However most of these techniques and facilities are not yet being adopted in most of the cities , thus creating garbage menace. Garbage is being thrown into rivers and been laying by the roadsides, thereby polluting the river beds and the water, causing harm to aquatic life.
Deforestation- Due to massive development works in most of the cities and villages heavy deforestation activities have taken place e affecting the floral and fauna and increasing pollution levels of the country thus lowering its environmental performance index.
India’s energy resources are unable to meet its population needs. Most of the villages still face shortage of electric energy and water resources. This affects the health and causes other inconveniences to these affected people. This has also brought down the performance ranking of India drastically.
Government is still in course of taking several measures to bring up its environmental performance index, this may help India to a certain extent to recover its position to higher level of the environmental performance index.
