Ice cream Man Summary
‘Ice – cream man’ is a very realistic and beautiful poem by Rachel Field. The poem is about the relief small children get after seeing the ice cream truck. In the scorching summer heat ice cream provides them happiness and relaxation.
The first part of the poem
“When summer’s ………………………….. Street”
Are the beginning line of the poem in which the poet describes about the happiness the ice cream man spread. During the summer it is very hot and humid. The ice cream man then comes with his beautiful small truck and moves around the streets spreading happiness among kids.
The second para of the poem “Beneath his ……………………… White”,
The poet highlights a very beautiful and joyful picture. The children feel so excited and happy to see the ice – cream truck fill cones with cold and creamy ice – cream. The poet in this para also brings to light the innocence of the small children who are delighted to see the ice cream truck.
The third para of the poem “Vanilla ………………… Pink” describes the variety of flavours the ice cream man brings along. Creamy white vanilla to fruity strawberry and even children’s favourite chocolate flavours. Along with ice – cream he also brings bottles full of frosty fizz of different colours attracting children. The children are extremely glad and surprised at the same time.
The concluding lines “This cart ………………………… Honeybees” describes a similarity between the ice – cream truck and a flower bed. The flower bed contains sweet peas which attracts the bees, in the same way the children get attracted to the ice – cream truck full of ice – cream and fizz. The poem in a very simple way describes how the ice – cream truck brings smile to the face of the innocent children.
