I Want Something in a Cage Summary
The story is about Mr. Purcell who owns a pet shop. A strange customer comes in the shop a morning in search of something.
The 1st 4 Para’s:
The 1st 4 Para’s of the story “Mr. Purcell ……………… detailed columns of advertisement.” describes the character of Mr. Purcell. Mr. Purcell was a non-believer of ghost. But one fine day a strange man came to his shop who bought 2 doves. He did a very strange act which made Mr. Purcell discover a unusual sense. Mr. Purcell was a small fussy man, red cheeks & a melon stomach. He wore large glasses which made him look wise. He ran a pet shop which had variety of pets & canaries. There was a constant movement in the shop with whispering of twitters, rustling sound, sudden squeaks. The creatures pulsed for their endless flicker of life, but he found them cute. He would smile & ask the customers weren’t they cute enough. Every morning he had a fixed routine of opening his shop & then he stood on his stool &unfold the morning paper. He would digest every day news & nod in grave agreement.
The 5th to 8th Para:
The 5th to 6th Para “It was a rough day ……………….. Around the shadowy shop” describe the strange customer that came to the shop. It was rough day. A strong wind below making the air filled with frost. He had completed his everyday tasks & mounted on the stool to unfold the paper. The chirping & squeaking sound did not even bother Mr. Purcell. There was a bell which sang whenever a customer opened the door. However Mr. Purcell could recall for the first time the bell failed to ring & a customer was standing just ring & or customer was standing just near him as if he had appeared from somewhere. Mr. Purcell from the first instant of the customer got a feeling that the man hated him but still Mr. Purcell still greeted the customer with a fake smile. The customer wore shiny shoes & a suit that was ill filled. He ignored Mr. Purpose & gazed at the shop.
The 9th to 17th Para:
The 9th to 17th Para “A nasty morning volunteered ………………. That’s certainly a long time now” describe the conversation between both of them. The customer stared at Mr. Purcell as if he was just now aware of Mr. Purcell’s presence & demanded to buy something in a cage. Mr. Purcell was a bit confused he again demanded something that was small. Mr. Purcell narrowed his eyes & pursed his lips & told if he wanted white hats. The man denied & told something that had wings. The customer suddenly pointed out to a pair of white snowy doves & asked the price. Mr. Purcell promoted five-fifty for the beautiful pair. The man was rest fallen & took out a five dollar & gave it to Mr. Purcell saying that is what he had Mr. Purcell made a quick calculation & agreed. He took the 5 dollars & handed the customer the cage & asked about the constant noise which did not bother Mr. Purcell. Mr. Purcell was surprised as if he could hear nothing. The customer mentioned that he spent 10 years to earn then 5 dollars. Mr. Purcell remarked that it was a long long time.
The 18th& 19th Para:
The 18th& 19th Para conclude the story “They give you five ……………… Felt vaguely insulted” describe the strange incident that happened. The man kept talking that they gave him 5 dollars & a cheap suit & also was told not to be caught. Mr. Purcell wanted to advise him something about feeding the doves. The man strangely swung around & moved out of the store. Mr. Purcell was relived. He stared through the window. The customer was holding the cage high up in the air & suddenly he opened the cage & let the coves fly high. He dropped the cage & put his hands in his trouser packets. Mr. Purcell was in deep thought that how desperately the customer wanted the doves & had spent his ten-years income for them & had even let them loose. Mr. Purcell felt vaguely insulted.
