His First Flight Summary Class 10 Chapter Three by Liam O Flaherty
I: HIS FIRST FLIGHT
“His First Flight” is a masterpiece written in simple words by Liam O’ Flaherty. The story is about a young seagull who is afraid to take a flight because he feels his wings will not support him. The short story explains the human tendency of not taking the first step because of their low confidence and fear of losing even before trying. The story begins with the young seagull, who is afraid to fly. His siblings have already learned the art of flying, and they have all learned to fly properly, but the young seagull is afraid as he feels he’ll fall in the expanse of the sea. He is scolded and taunted for his cowardice by his family and, at last, is left without food as a punishment by his mother. She then comes up with a brilliant trick and tears food in front of the young seagull, seeing which he begs and pleads for food. Finally, she brings the piece of meat near the edge of the brink and his beak and throws it. Out of hunger and rage, he dives for the piece of meat and falls in the space where his heart skips a beat. He then flaps his wings and flies high and dives down, feeling the expanse of sea beneath him. His family goes all happy and praises his courage as he finally joins his tribe and learns to fly. The story explains how much we chose to ignore our potential and hide behind the curtains of excuses and fears, and do not take a step forward of courage to achieve our dreams.
