Where are Herons found?
Herons are found in the Tropical region River, Lakes, Swamps, ponds and seas in many countries except Antarctica.
They are active during Dawn or even during Dusk.
Appearance, Diet and Feeding Technique-
Herons are medium-sized birds that have ‘S-shaped long, also short neck which is extended and stretched while flying. The legs are long and strong with 4 toes of which 3 are in from position and the last in the back.
They have thick bills. Herons are carnivores hence they prey upon Frogs, Crustaceans, Molluscs, Aquatic insects, Bird eggs, and rodents. Some species also feed on Grains, Seeds, and Peas.
The unique strategy for hunting is to sit or stand on the edge, support or bank of Water Body and let the prey approach them accidentally. They will strike the unaware fish or prey and consume it.
They also stand or crouched in an upright position that is very still and almost get cryptic, which gives them the extended vision to spot the prey.
Courtship, Breeding & Nesting.
Herons are Monogamous, they mate with one partner every season. Also, they maintain a colony of nests. There might be more than one nest you will find on a Tree above the water body, shrubs or hidden in vegetation.
In some species, males built a nest and display it to a Female. Their plumage consists of some erectile feathers on their plumage. In some species, the Male gathers the materials and the Female makes the nests. Nest is made up of Twigs and Dry leaves.
Females lay 3-7 eggs and incubate them for 27 to 29 days. The Nesting period is of 1-2 months.
