Essay on Generation Gap for Class 10, 12, Mains Exam (UPSC, PSC, SSC)
Generation Gap Essay : With the drastic change in society, a generation gap takes place between old people and young people. The gap is reflected by the disparity in the attitude between the younger and the older generations. Society is always exposed to dynamics and thus it is changing at a constant pace.
This gives birth to new ideas, ideologies, beliefs, opinions and the overall behaviour of the new generations which differs from that of the older generations. In most cases, it is also observed that the relationship between the parent and the child is affected due to the generation gap. The older ideas are mostly regarded as stereotypes and backdated even though they ingrain optimistic views.
Discussion
The difference in generation gaps can be in terms of cultural views, political views, purchasing views and other notions related to pop culture. In all periods of history, the concept of the generation gap is widely prevalent. The difference between these gaps has broadened in the 20th and the 21st century.
There are various factors that lead to generation gaps. It is noted that the elderly people expect the younger people to behave as they did. The younger generation is outspoken and they feel candid to speak on matters that are otherwise regarded as forbidden by the older generations. For instance, the older generations, in India, consider topics related to sex, homosexuals, transgenders, and menstruation as taboo and thus they do not like discussing these matters or creating any concerns with regard to this among the younger generations. On the contrary, the younger generations might get involved in taking the wrong decisions, as they are not being aware of their families related to the aforementioned topics. Moreover, there are many orthodox families in India, which detest love marriage and believe that arranged marriages can bring well-being. On the other hand, young generations do not feel shy to talk about their partners and think that it is absolutely correct to express love and marry their loved ones.
People belonging to the older generations believe in collectivism and thus they prefer living in joint families. However, the younger generations are imbued with an individualist attitude and thus they prefer living in nuclear families. This implies that the overall lifestyle of the people has been impacted in a drastic way. In terms of workplace attitudes, the thoughts of the young generation and the older generation also vary. For instance, people of the older generations are patient and maintain perseverance. However, the younger generation of employees often get impatient at work and thus they tend to work recklessly. In addition, the attitudes of women have also changed. For instance, the older generations could not accept the fact that women should earn a living and become independent. However, the younger generations view women from a different perspective.
Conclusion
In conclusion, it can be said that traditionalists, baby boomers, generation x and generation y, come up with different perspectives and attitudes towards life. However, it is totally agreeable to have a different opinion, but it has to be assured that the opinion of any of the generations does not hurt the sentiments of others. It is also essential for the younger generation to respect the opinion of the older generation and in case of any disputes, it is much needed to resolve the issues by stating proper logic, so as to avoid the occurrence of any type of conflict.
