Full form of LASER: Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation.
What is LASER :
A laser is a device that emits a beam of coherent light through an optical amplification process. It produces a very narrow beam of light that is useful in many technologies and instruments.
Type of laser
1) Gas lasers-These type of lasers.Made-up of HeNe,Ar+,Co2,N2,HCN Etc.
2) Solid-state laser.
It uses a solid mixed with rare earth elements as their source of optical gain Like neodymium, chromium, and thulium.
Eg-Ruby laser.
3) Liquid laser-It also known as dye laser. In this laser liquid used as active medium .Commonly used fluorescence,Rhodamine B, Rhodamine 6G.
4) Semiconductor laser.-It is Similar to light emitting diode. In which a diode pumped directly with electrical current.
5) Fibre Laser-In this active gain medium is an optical fiber doped with rare earth element like erbium , ytterbium, neodymium etc.
Application.
1) Laser.Used in industries.Science and technology.Military, etc.
2) Use them for bloodless surgery.
3) used in space communication.Radar satellites.
4) Laser light is used in underwater communication networks.
5) Used in optical fiber to send information over a larger distance.
Advantages
1) Having high information carrying capacity
2) Free from electromagnetic interference.
3) It has very minimal signal leakage.
4) It has low divergence and high intensity.
Disadvantages.
1) It is costly to maintain. Increased complexity and duration of the laser treatment.
2) Laser beam is delicate to handle in the cutting process.
3) Harmful for human beings.
