Full form of GPS
- Full form of GPS is Global Positioning System.
GPS stands for Global Positioning System. It can be defined as a technique by the help of which we can find location of any object, Direction, time accurately. It is mostly used for navigation to find location. It can be used in mobile phones, planes, buses, cars etc.
When GPS was first launched?
It was launched in 1973 by US Air Force and its official name is NAVSTAR GPS which stands for Navigation Satellite Timing and Raining system. It became fully operational for public on April 27th 1995. First satellite of this system was launched in 1978 and last was launched on 1995.
How does GPS work?
GPS works with the help of satellites. USA has launched more than 50 satellites into space which rotate around the earth and send signals 24×7. To receive those signals, we need a GPS receiver. GPS receiver calculates the location based on the signals send by the satellites. Receiver also receives the time and location of these satellites and for better results it receives signals from 4 satellites with the help of which receiver can find the dimension, position, longitude, latitude and altitude.
What are the segments GPS is divided into?
It is divided into 3 segments-
- Space Segment (GPS satellites): In this GPS satellites rotate around the earth and send data to users.
- Control Segment (Ground Control Station): In this, satellites are controlled by the Ground Control Station and they’re automated and monitored by them.
- GPS Receiver: This receives signals in our devices. And we can find out our location with the help of this.
