Full form of DRDO: A defence research and development organisation (DRDO) is an organisation set up by the government of a nation to conduct and fund R&D on defence technologies. DRDO’s are usually funded through the military budget. The goal of DRDO is to create cutting edge defence technologies that will help keep a nation safe from attack. This can be done through research and development projects, or through acquisition of intellectual property rights.
In India, the DRDO (Defence Research and Development Organization) was established in 1958 with a mandate to pursue technology for use in military hardware. It has since grown into an expansive department that conducts various types of research and development for both military and civilian purposes.
The DRDO is currently involved in projects such as unmanned aerial vehicles, unmanned underwater vehicles, high-powered rocket engines, disease-detection systems, night-vision scopes, aircraft carrier design, missile defence systems, bulletproof vests, underwater body suits, and much more.
Functions of DRDO
Defence research and development organisations (DRDO) are responsible for the design, testing, evaluation, and production of weapons systems and other military equipment. They ensure that India retains a technological edge over its adversaries by developing new technologies and exploring alternative methods of warfare.
The main functions of DRDO are:
– Development of new technologies for use by the Armed Forces
– Invention or acquisition of innovative weaponry system prototypes
– Testing and trials of these weapons systems in various environments to ensure their effectiveness
– Production & supply to Arms forces.
DRDO in India
DRDO was established on 29 October 1950 with the merger of the Central Research Laboratory (CRL), Defence Science Academy(DSA), Royal Indian Air Force Institute of Technology(RIFIT), Directorate General of Ordnance Transmission & Weapon Systems Lt Gen S M K Menon as its first director.
Today, DRDO is a major player in many areas of defence technology across various domains such as armaments systems, combat vehicles, helicopters and missiles. It has over 27000 employees working in around 100 labs and institutes spread all over India under seven directorates: Armament Systems; Combat Vehicles & Battlefield Management Systems; Electronics & Telecommunications Systems; Engineering Services; Human Resources Development Organisation; Nuclear Physics Division etc.
What makes DRDO so special?
There are several reasons why DRDo stands out from other defence R&D establishments worldwide. First off, it is one of the few institutions that combines both basic science research with practical application through its laboratories- something that allows it to rapidly develop new technologies needed by the armed forces. Secondly, it has a large number of skilled engineers with years of experience in designing weapon systems who can help turn theoretical concepts into prototypes quickly – this helps keep up with fast-moving battlefield developments. Finally, unlike most government agencies which rely mainly on external funding sources to support their activities ,
