Full form of DSP: Deputy Superintendent of Police is the highest-ranking police officer of a state or territory in Australia. They are responsible for commanding the state or territory’s police force, including the rank and file officers.
Duties of DSP
Duties may include managing budgeting, planning and policy, as well as overseeing law enforcement. They may also lead investigations and oversight of investigations into crimes, such as murder and child abuse. In some states and territories, deputy superintendents serve as the chief of police at some point in their careers. In other states, like Queensland, there is no separate rank for deputy superintendent at all; all senior officer ranks are assistant commissioners.
Duties may also include training new officers, maintaining records from the state’s central registry system, and serving as a judge in court cases when needed. They may also lead investigations into internal misconduct by police officers or departmental corruption by public employees. In some instances they may be sent to jail if they have been convicted of a crime while on duty or have committed an act of moral turpitude after being sworn in office.
In many areas they have administrative control over officers on traffic duty or on foot patrol. They may also be sent to jail if they have been convicted of a crime while on duty or have committed an act of moral turpitude after being sworn in office.
Depending on the jurisdiction they may also be responsible for overseeing correctional programmes for criminals.
The highest rank in the Indian police system is that of the metropolitan chief commissioner of police, who leads policing organisations in large cities and has considerable authority over law enforcement activities in his jurisdiction. This rank is equivalent to that of a deputy inspector general in the British police, a major general in the United States’ armed forces, or a brigadier general in the Canadian forces. The DSP is the head of an area of responsibility and heads the local administration of law enforcement. The DSP may delegate some administrative duties to sub-deputy superintendents. The DSP has direct command over police personnel engaged in duties such as traffic policing, investigation, counter-terrorism and crowd control. The deputy superintendent is also responsible for maintaining order in jails and prisons across India . The deputy superintendent may be assisted by other ranks such as constables and sub-inspectors.
