Full form of BIS: The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) is an autonomous body under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India. It was established in the year of 1956. The Bureau is responsible for developing standards for goods and services that are used in India. The Bureau has a three-tier system for standardisation: National Standards, Regional Standards and Sectoral Standards. The National Standards are developed by the Central Office at New Delhi, while Regional Standards are developed by Regional Offices at Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai and Guwahati. Sectoral standards are developed by Sectoral Boards constituted by the Central Government from time to time. The BIS is an autonomous body under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India. The Bureau has been instrumental in developing standards for a wide range of products and services including food, clothing, construction materials, electrical equipment, medical devices, etc.
The Bureau of Indian Standards is mainly responsible for developing standards for the following sectors:- Consumer Products: Electrical and electronic products, construction materials, food, furniture, textiles and textiles machinery manufacturing technologies.- Industrial Products: Air and water pollution control technologies; measuring instruments; medical devices.- Technical Services: Geometry design; metrology. Work of the Bureau of Indian Standards
The Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 1986 (63 of 1986) provides the statutory framework for the functioning of the Bureau of Indian Standards. The Bureau of Indian Standards Act (63 of 1986), the Bureau of Indian Standards (Certification Marks) Act (47 of 1999) and the Quality Control Order (All India Marking Scheme for Precious Metal Assaying and Hallmarking) Act (52 of 2016) are the three Acts administered by the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution. The Bureau of Indian Standards has been playing a major role in the field of standardisation, certification and quality assurance of products, processes and services. The Bureau has been working towards harmonious development of the standards movement in India and also to upgrade the quality of Indian products and services so as to facilitate their supply and procurement.
