In India, about 898,024,053 people live in village (according to 2020 census). Our eyes flash with the image of lush greenery, extensive fields with crops, gazing cows, blue rivers, clear blue skies, whenever we come across the term “village’’. The environment of village is placid and peaceful. People lead a simple life devoid of stress and worries. They toil very hard for a living. Village life is blithesome which has inspired many poets to reflect about it in their renowned works. Many poets of Romantic age such as William Wordsworth, John Keats, Percy Bysshe Shelley, William Blake glorified about village life in their works. Bengali poets like Rabindranath Tagore, Jibanananda Das, Pallikavi Jasimuddin and many others portrayed village life in their poetries. As for instance William Wordsworth’s ‘Solitary Reaper’ and ‘Daffodils’ lucidly portrays the beauty of village life. ‘Banglar Mukh Ami dekhiachi’ by Jibanananda Das, ‘Paper Boats’ by Rabindranath Tagore beautifies village life in their works.
Lifestyle of Village People:
People in village live a happy life, despite having limited access to many resources. Agriculture is the main occupation of village them so most of them are farmers. Sometimes, the wives also help their husbands in the fields, besides doing the household chores. The ethic of living in joint families still prevail in villages unlike the city. Other professions include barbers, milkman, teachers,oilman, potters and priest. Class and caste division exist in village. People living in joint families are responsible towards one another, they share a bond of sharing and caring.They also share good relation with their neighbors and celebrate festivals together. Girls are married off at a very young age as compared to boys. Mostly, village people are pious. Pongal,Bihu, Onam, Makar Sankranti, Lohri, Gudi Padwa,Baisakhi are few of the many harvest festivals celebrated in India. The food grains grown by the farmers are rice, maize, jowar, wheat, barley, pulses etc. Cash crops such as cotton, sugarcane, groundnut isgrown. Plantation crop such as tea and coffee are also grown. People go to the fields in the morning and come by evening. They also rear chicken and ducks for economic purposes. They fish from ponds either for consumption or selling or both. Children, also wake up early in the morning as their parents and go to school. In the evening they also play game with their friends such as hop-scotch, I-spy, kabaddi, gilli- danda, hide and seek, etc.
Infrastructure and transportation:
Rural roads are narrow, made of mud, with green fields on both sides. According to 2019 census, 90 percent of villages in India have been electrified by now. 42.9 percent of rural households use handpumps for drinking and almost every locality has tube-well by now. Houses are mostly kachchha built of built with roofs thatched with hay. However, few houses are made of bricks. Few villages have light poles on streets, whereas many do not have. Health centers are one or two in number, that too, they are located far off. Schools are also very few in number. Commuting to school becomes very cumbersome for the students due to geographical location. Transportation mostly includes bullock carts, rickshaws and bicycles.
Conclusion:
The government of India is adopting certain measures to bring about improvement in the rural areas. Life of village people is blissful as they know how to live in harmony. Unlike the urban people they do not fight over trivial matters, as they have developed a sense of fraternity among themselves.Their lifestyle is much simple and they live a happy life with whatever they can afford.
