Essay – History is the series of Victories Won by the Scientific Man Over the Romantic Man
Introduction
History can be defined as the documentation of events significant to the administration of states, existent and transitioned socio-economic climate, shifting power balances from a particular starting point such as ancient, medieval and modern history in chronological order. History is often written and shaped by individuals who have ended up on the victorious side. For instance, the entire perception of events occurring in World War II is established by the allied forces of the USA, UK, France and USSR while the perspectives of the allied powers are ignored.
Discussion
Historians have witnessed a trend in battles or modern warfare that wars have mostly been won by men who have a scientific approach as compared to men who are fuelled by romantic ideals and beliefs. For instance, taking the aforementioned example of the Second World War, which engaged the Axis powers, headed by Germany under the influence of the Nazi Party, Italy and Japan were motivated by idealistic beliefs of the supremacy of the Aryan Race whereas the allied forces were motivated by diplomatic and strategic relations. The war culminated with Allied forces who were characterized as the scientific bloc.
A scientific man is characteristic of an objective approach to task completion, a rational frame of mind who looks for a reason rather than the fulfilment of desire. In contradiction, a Romantic man can be defined as one who is motivated by the gratification of desires, and adherence to personal ideals and beliefs. In this context, the proverb “history is written by the victors” is justified as scientific men have been the victors more often than romantic men. However, the predicament arises when men have both scientific and romantic facets to their personalities.
However, history is created by men who were scientific in their approach to work For instance, the Later Vedic Age in India marked the establishment of a caste-based society. The classification of human beings into castes based on their birth was influenced by religious ideals and lust for racial supremacy rather than scientific reasoning and development. History is etched with the names of personalities who voiced their opinions against such social stigmas such as Dr B.R. Ambedkar who brought about the Right to Equality and the Right Against Exploitation in part III, Article 21-36 of the Indian Constitution. He has made his place in History as the father of the Indian Constitution. Raja Rammohan Roy is another reformer who has made a place in Indian history for reforming society with a scientific approach. Deeply influenced by philosophers such as Aristotle and modernized Indian society by abolishing Sati. He is etched in History as the Father of the Indian Renaissance.
Conclusion
To conclude, history is written by victorious men. More often than not battles, be they political or social, are won by men who had a scientific bend of mind, rational sensibilities and logical approaches to solving problems. The instances of Raja Rammohan Roy and B.R. Ambedkar are a testament to the fact scientific men have always preceded and made a place in history rather than romantic men.
