Difference between Spontaneous and Non-Spontaneous reaction
Difference between Spontaneous reaction and Non-Spontaneous reaction are in tabular form below –
Spontaneous reaction |
Non-Spontaneous reaction |
1) An Chemical or biological reaction that takes place without the influence of any outside factors is termed as spontaneous reaction | 1) Chemical or biological reaction that can’t take place without the influence of any outside factor is termed as non- spontaneous reaction. |
2) Spontaneous favors increasing the entropy while decreasing the enthalpy of a thermodynamics system | 2) Non – spontaneous reactions do not favor the increasing entropy or decreasing enthalpy at normal conditions |
3) The Gibbs free energy of a spontaneous reaction is a negative value | 3) The Gibbs free energy of non-spontaneous reaction is a positive value |
4) Spontaneous reactions do not require energy put in to continue, under a proper situation | 4) Non- Spontaneous reaction requires energy put in to continue. |
5) It Releases the free energy from the system making it more stable. | 5) It Increases the total energy of a system. |
6) The total energy of the product is less than that of the reactions.
|
6) The total energy of the products is higher than that of the system.
|
7) Spontaneous reaction occurs speedily. | 7) Non-spontaneous reactions occur gradually. |
8) Increase the entropy | 8) Decrease the entropy. |
9) Spontaneous reactions will produce products when reactants come together. | 9) No products form when reactants come together.
|
10) Example of spontaneous reaction: combustion reaction. | 10) Example of non-spontaneous reaction: reaction between atmospheric nitrogen and oxygen. |
