DEFINITION
It is a separation of equal and opposite charges preferably in a molecule or a compound with different types of atoms.
Contents
There are two types of types :- i) electric dipole ii)magnetic dipole
i) Electric dipole – When a positive and negative charges is separated from each other then electric dipole occur .It may be temporary or permanent .
ii) Magnetic dipole – It is closed loop of electric current. example- a single loop of wire carrying current through it.
EXAMPLE
Water molecule is an example of dipole. Also non- polar molecules like carbon dioxide (CO2) contain dipole. In this the charge is separated between oxygen and carbon atom.
