DEFINITION
It is the arrangement of electrodes containing gas at lower pressure. It is the cylindrical tube in which an electrical conduction takes place. It contains two metal plates connecting on opposite sides. These plates are called cathode and anode. The discharge tube or vacuum tube was discovered by German physicist Heinrich Geissler.
Significance
The significance of the discharge tube is that it is used as a surge protector and to limit voltage surge. The gases filled in the discharge tube are hydrogen or noble gases. The discharge tube is used in the cathode ray experiment by JJ Thomson. In the discharge tube the current flows from ionized gas giving fluorescent neon like colour.
