Difference between sedimentation and filtration
Sedimentation |
Filtration |
Sedimentation is a process which contains an sediment settled down at the bottom, that is insoluble impurity. | Filtration is analytical separation technique which is used to separate the solid and liquid. |
In these process one substance settle down at the bottom of flask and the upper substance can be separated by pouring | When there is mixture of two components one solid and one liquid, then we can separate these Insoluble mixture with filtration process. |
It involves two phases – solid and liquid which are not completely soluble. | Filtration involve one solid and another liquid which are insoluble. |
In the Sedimentation impurity settled down called sediment, and soluble substances is with liquid. | Filtration filter out the liquid part called filtrate, and the solid part remains as an residue, on the filter paper. |
Example of Sedimentation –
Insoluble mixture of soil and water – Soil settle as sediment and some soluble part with liquid water above it. |
Example of filtration is – mixture Of sand and water. The mixture of sand and water is separated with filtration. The water get filtered with filter paper and sand remains on it. |
