(1) Why does a measurement need both a ‘number’ and a ‘unit’ for its complete specification?
Answer:- To express the measurement accurately and properly it needs both numbers as well as units.
(2) Why is a foot step, or a hand span, not used as a standard unit of length?
Answer:- The length of hand span and footsteps of every person is different so they are not used as a standard unit of length.
(3) Radha was performing an experiment in the Science Laboratory. The metre scale, that she was using to measure the length of a string, was worn out between its 1 cm and its 2 cm marks, due to overuse.
(a) She measures the length of a string by keeping its one end at the 3.0 cm mark. If the other end of the string ‘reads’ 92.8 cm, find the length of the string.
(b) Write the precautions, to be followed, when a metre scale is being used for measuring a given length.

(A) To find out the length of string we need to subtract initial length from the final length Length of string = Final length – initial length.
= 92.8 – 3.0
= 89.8cm.

Rest
(1) When an object does not change its position with respect to its immediate surroundings then the object is at rest.
(2) Ex:- The bed lying in a room is at rest with respect to the wall of the room.
Motion
(1) When an object changes its position with respect to its immediate surroundings then the object is in motion.
(2) Ex:- Cars running on the road are in motion with respect to the lamp posts, trees or bus stops on the roadside.

A.) Rectilinear Motion

Curvilinear motion
(1) When an object moves, from one position to another, along a curved line, the object is said to have a curvilinear motion.
(2) Ex:- The motion of the tip of the pen while writing.
B.) Rotation
(1) When an object keeps on moving round and round without changing its position is known as rotation.
(2) Ex:- merry go round, fan.
Revolution
(1) The motion of an object is known as a revolution, if it moves around a central point, changing its position continuously, usually following a circular path.
(2) Ex:- The earth revolves around the sun.
