→ Silk fibers are also animal fiber. Silkworms spin the silk fiber. The rearing of silkworms for obtaining silk is called as sericulture.

→ The caterpillar grow in size and it is ready to enter the next stage of its life history called as pupa. In pupal stage , the caterpillar swings its head from side to side in the form of figure of 8 and during this movement of head it secrets fibre made of protein which on exposure to air becomes silk fiber.

→ The caterpillar completely covers itself by silk fibers and turns into pupa. This covering is known as cocoon. Further development of pupa in two mouth continuous inside the cocoon.

→ Mulberry silk moth is a common silk moth whose silk fiber from the cuckoo of the moth is very soft, lustrous and elastic and it can be dyed in beautiful colors.
Q.17.) Explain rearing of silkworms ?
→ 1.) A female silk moth lays hundreds of eggs at a time. The eggs are Store carefully on strips of cloth or paper and sold to silkworm farmers . The farmers keep eggs under hygienic conditions and under suitable conditions of temperature and humidity
2.) The eggs are warmed to a suitable temperature for the larvae to hatch from eggs.
3.) This is done when mulberry trees beer a fresh crop of leaves.
4.) The larvae called caterpillar or silkworm eat day and night and increase enormously in size.
5.) The larvae kept in bamboo trays along with freshly chopped mulberry leaves. After 30 days , the caterpillar stop eating and move to tiny chamber of bamboo in the tray to spin cocoons.
6.) Small racks provided in a trace to which cocoons get attached the caterpillar spins the cocoon inside which develops the silk moth.

→ 1.) A pile of cocoon is used for obtaining silk fiber. The kukun kept under Sun or boiled or expose to steam. The silk fibers then separated out.
2.) The process of taking out threads from the cocoon for use as a silk called as reeling of the silk.
