i.) The famous Tamil epic ‘Silappadikaram’ was written by a poet named Ilango around 1800 years ago. It is a love story of a merchant Kovalan and Madhavi. Kovalan who went to Madurai with Madhavi, leaving his wife Kannagi, was falsely accused of theft and was sentenced to death by the King. His wife Kannagi who still loved him took revenge by destroying the city of Madurai.
ii.) Ayurveda is an ancient medical system of India which has been developed in our country by many ancient health practitioners. Charaka (1st – 2nd century) is called the father of Ayurveda. He wrote a book called ‘Charak Samhita’ in which he discussed about many diseases and their treatment. Another famous practitioner was Sushruta (c. 4th century C.E.) who in his book ‘Susruta Samhita’ wrote about various surgeries and their procedure.
iii.) Aryabhata was a mathematician and astronomer who wrote many books in Sanskrit language. The most famous and important was ‘Aryabhatiyam’. He discovered about rotation of the earth on its axis and how it causes day and night, he scientifically described the reasons for eclipses, discussed about the calculation of circumference of a circle which is similar to the modernformula.

i.) A number of Hindu religious stories and fables were famous among the people about but these stories were not recorded. Around 1500 years ago, the process of recording these stories started. Among the most important religious texts was Puranas. The Puranas, written in Sanskrit verse contain stories gods and goddesses like Vishnu, Shiva, Durga who were the most important gods. These stories were recited in the temples by priests. Another important epic was The Mahabharata, by Vyasa was the story of the Kauravas and the Pandavas who were cousins and fought over the throne of Hastinapur. This epic dealt with stories of human relations, the desire, greed, ambition of all humans. The Sanskrit Ramayana was written by Valmiki where the prince of Kosala, Ram was sent to exile and how his wife Sita was abducted by Ravana. The stories were about victory of righteousness over evil. All these epic stories and fables were teachings about human life.
ii.) The building of stupas and temples were an extensive procedure. The kings and queens took an active participation in the process, they spent a huge amount of money in the construction work. The quality of stone was checked, the best quality stone was brought, quarried and transported to the site. The building was constructed by following all architectural rules. Mostly all stupas and temples were divided into three parts: pradakshina patha, mandapa and garbagriha. The shikhara or the tower was an important part of the building.The stupa or the temple was decorated by the gifts offered by the devotees who came to visit. Merchants, farmers, smiths and many other men and women offered their gifts for decoration.
