AP 10th Class English Chapter 3A The Journey Solution
I.) Answer the following questions.
1.) ‘After spending a leisurely Sunday at home, the very thought of returning to work on Monday is tiring.’ Do you agree? Have you ever felt so?
Sunday happens to be a day when all the offices and educational institutions are closed, people usually get leave on this day and like to relax and enjoy themselves with family and friends. Some dishes are spent in leisure as people like to indulge in their hobbies and some extravaganza.
I agree with the fact that spending Sunday at home and then returning to work on Monday can be tiring. Yes I have failed so quite a few times
2.) The last sentence of the first paragraph and the first sentence of the second paragraph appear to contradict each other. What could be the reason for the change in the decision?
The last line of the first stanza says obviously I did not want to go, that is the first line of the second stanza says however, I finally did decide to go. Both the lines are contradictory and the person had to change his mind because He had already spent six months at his home hence it was time to resume at work ,also the fact that he was in debt did not help.
3.) Why did the author get into debt? Think of some possible reasons.
He spent a vacation of about six months at his home away from work and very recently he had got married. His responsibilities had increased so this could be a possible explanation that for spending on his marriage and the newly added member in his family increased his expenses and he thus got into debt.
4.) Why was the author reluctant to carry his own luggage? What would you do if you were in the author’s place?
The author was a government officer and he thought he would embarrass himself if he carried his own luggage. in my opinion doing one’s own job does not do you mean his or her position.if I were in his place I would have carried my own luggage
5.) The author feared that the whole world would laugh at him if he carried the trunk. Was the fear imaginary or real? Give reasons for your answer.
The fear was definitely imaginary. The reason why he couldn’t have probably been embarrassed for carrying his own trunk is that, it is very normal of people to do their own job if he did not carry his own trunk then others had to do it for him and that would have been even more embarrassing that he had to make others do his own job. Not only that even the author himself blamed his education and white collar job for the fact that he had a false pride that prevented him from carrying his own luggage
6.) Choose one sentence from the story that best expresses the author’s false prestige. Support your answer with details from the story.
The lines “after all, I was a government officer and the idea of people seeing me carry my own luggage was not at all amusing”. This line shed some light onto the author’s false pride.
7.) What does the phrase ‘opposite directions’ in the last sentence suggest?
The phrase opposite direction suggests that both of them the father and the son had their own destinies and jobs as well as responsibilities that needed to be fulfilled.
8.) How was the story told? Were the events narrated in the order in which they had happened? Spot the sentences where the course of narration changed its directions. How effective was it?
The story was told in first person narrative and in the first part it was narrated in the order in which it had happened but later on the narrative changed. After the author talks about the fact that he and his father drank together he started going back in time and narrating the incidents that had happened in the past.
II.) Write the number of the paragraph that gives the stated information in each of the following sentences.
1.) The author enjoyed his married life. – First paragraph
2.) The author tried to convince himself that he had not done anything wrong. – eleventh paragraph
3.) The author was ashamed of making his father carry his trunk. – Tenth paragraph
4.) The author looks at himself and his father as two travellers taking two different roads. – Fourth paragraph
III.) The following statements are false. Correct them.
1.) The author offered to carry the trunk for some time.
2.) The author could decide on whether to allow his father to carry the trunk or not.
3.) The author took unpaid leave.
4.) The father was not happy with the old shoes his son gave him.
