I.) Answer the following questions.
1.) ‘To Lincoln, defeat was a detour and not a dead end.’ Justify this statement from the life of Lincoln.
Before tasting success Abraham Lincoln has to face a series of professional and personal failures. He failed in business when he was just 21, subsequently he was defeated in a legislative race at age 22. He failed again in business at age 24. He had to deal with the death of his lover at a young age 26, thus experiencing a severe breakdown at the age of 27. He lost a congressional race at age 34 followed by a senatorial race at age 45. At 47 He failed in an effort to become vice-president and lost yet again in a senatorial race at the age of 49. He was finally elected president of the United States at age 52.
2.) What did Socrates suggest as the secret to success? Do you agree or disagree with him? Give reasons for your answer.
Once a young man questioned Socrates, the philosopher, about what would be the key to success.. The young man was instructed by Socrates to meet him the following morning by the river. They got to know one another. The young man was asked to accompany Socrates as they headed toward the river. Socrates took the young man by surprise and ducked him into the water when the water reached their neck level. The boy fought to leave, but Socrates held him there until the boy’s skin turned blue. The young man gasped and took a deep breath of air as soon as Socrates pulled his head out of the water. Socrate enquired What did he desire the most while he was drowning in the water. “Air,” the boy responded. Socrates calmly explained that it was the true key to success. If one is determined and wants success as badly as the boy wants air to breathe, this would lead him on to success.
I feel he is right, the right amount of determination will only push a person to perform and work harder than he usually does, thereby paving the way of his success.
