Q5. Long Answer Type Questions:
i.) History and geography of an area are interlinked. The geographical features influence the lives of people, and the terrain in which they live influence the livelihood, culture and history of the people. For example, in Kerala, we find people are engaged in fishing as the state is situated near the sea. People also grow spices like cardamoms, cloves and pepper which is possible for the favorable weather conditions. The weather and terrain have attracted the traders. Many Arab and Jewish traders have come to this place and settled bringing along their cultures and traditions which have become an important part in the lives of native people and shaped a new culture. The Chinese influence can also be found in the names of different items like fishing nets known as “cheena valla”, frying utensil are known as “cheenachatti” are still used by people in Kerala. All these have shaped the culture of the place. The geographical features have helped people live in favorable conditions and flourish. Thus, the history and geography of a place are interlinked.
ii.) Diversity is the coexistence of various aspects of life in a place that helps in the development of a varied and progressing culture. History influences in forming diversity, people travel from one place to another, searching for new lands to settle or trade. They bring their customs, culture, religion and tradition along with them. Different other reasons like famine, drought and other natural calamities also make people shift. People in ancient times invaded new lands for treasure. These factors cause the mixing of languages, food, music, and religions, resulting in new styles and giving birth to diversities. The geographical features make people adapt to new lifestyles. The lifestyle of people near the sea is different from those living in the mountains. Thus, when people settle in different geographical areas, they follow different clothing styles, work patterns, and living styles. All these aspects create diversity.
