The Wind Cap Summary
The ‘wind cap’ is wonderful short story written by Jane Hyalt Yolen’. The story begins with a boy named Jon, who wish to become a sailor when he grows up. Jon was a farmer’s son and his mother disapproved to his wish o becoming a sailor saying he knows nothing about the sea. The boy was obedient and he started to work in his farm. One fine day while ploughing, Jon accidently came across a green turtle and rescued the turtle from a dirty mud patch. Jon kept turtle the turtle on his head to keep it safe. Upon finishing his work, Jon noticed that the turtle has turned into a fairy man. The fairy then asked Jon to make a wish for rescuing him. The fairy understood Jon’s desire even without Jon telling him. Out of gratitude, the fairy man grants Jon a cap. The cap would bring in wind according to his wish so that he can propel slip in right direction. With the cap came one warning, that no human hand would ever be able to take it off. Young Jon put the cap and went home excited and narrated the entire incident to his mother. This time Jon did not listen to his mother’s cautions. He put on his cap and went to the sea and started his journey as a sailor. He sailed for a year and then his desire to see the land arouse. The captain did not allow Jon to go. But Jon could not stop dreaming of the land. One afternoon, he fell to dreaming again. In his sleep, he moved unconsciously making his cap turn which led to unexpected storm. The captain understood that it was because of Jon that this storm has come. He tried to rip the cap off Jon’s head but he was unable to do so. Then in anger the captain threw Jon into the sea. Because of the sea waves the cap came off his head and the storm stopped. When the storm stopped Jon reached the land followed by his cap. He picked the cap and went back to his farm. Again in winter he began to dream of the sea. He took his cap and hides it in a place where the fairy could find it and take it back. From that day onward he remained half of the year on the shore and half on the sea till at last he owned his own boat and a hundred acre farm and the he came to be known as ‘Captain Turtle’.
