Telanagana State Board Class 9 Biology Chapter 4 Transportation through Plasma Membrane Solution:
Q1. The structure which controls the entry and exit of the materials through the cell is
(b) Cell membrane.
Q2. Fill in the blanks:-
- The smell of flowers reaches us through a process of_diffusion.
- The MIC gas of Bhopal tragedy was spread throughout the city through the process of_
- Water enters the potato osmometer due to a process called _osmosis.
- The fresh grape wrinkles if kept in Salt water because of_osmosis.
Q3. What do you mean by permeability of membrane?
Explain with suitable example.
Ans- Allowing all the materials to pass through is called as permeability. Plasma membrane is not permeable for all materials. Plasma membrane is selectively permeable because it allow certain materials to enter and allow exit of some substances which create passage of remaining substances.
Q4. If the dried vegetables are kept in water they become fresh. What is the reason?
Ans- The dried vegetables become fresh when kept in water because of osmosis. Water enters the vegetables through osmosis and moves in the cell due to which the vegetables will be fresh. Water inside the vegetables move due to which stomata opens and closes. Hence this is reason due to which vegetables in water become fresh.
Q5. Name the process by which we can get fresh water from sea water?
Ans- The process by which we can get fresh water from sea water is called as reverse osmosis.
Q7. Why do doctors administer saline only not the distilled water?
Ans- Saline water gives energy to the body, if person is weak due to some health issue saline boosts the energy.
Saline has minerals present in it, distilled water don’t have minerals due to presence of these minerals saline gives energy to the body. Distilled water is just a sterile water. Hence, doctors administer saline only not the distilled water.
Q9. What will happen if cells do not have ability of permeability?
Ans- Permeability is the process which allows the substances to pass through cell membrane. If in the cell there is no permeability there will not be any exchange of materials to the plasma membrane.
Q10. What are your observations in experiments to know diffusion?
Ans- Diffusion is in which the materials spread equally when suspended in a medium like water and air. In first experiment of potassium permanganate we observe the movement of the pink colour in petri dish and turn it into purple. The movement of the colour every minute gets spread. The observation with coffee powder is the same the particles of coffee move or spread in the water.
Q11. Discuss with your friends and write the list of incidences where diffusion occur.
Ans- The incidences where diffusion occur:-
- The scent smell diffuses in air
- The tea bag diffuses in air
- Smoke of cigarette
- Potassium permanganate turns into purple colour if placed in Petri dish.
Q13. You have purchased a coconut in the market. By shaking it you found that there is less water in the coconut. Can you fill the coconut with water without making a hole in it?
Ans- The process in which water molecules enter the cell is called endosmosis. By this process I think we can fill the water in coconut without making hole to coconut.
Q14. How diffusion is useful in daily life?
Ans- In daily life there are many incidences which we can relate and say it is diffusion. Diffusion is useful in daily life in many ways. Suppose if any person sprays the scent on body by the smell we can tell the name of that scent or perfume and can easily identify where is that person. Coffee powder aroma diffuses in hot water, while diffusing in hot water we can smell and tell it is coffee powder.
Q15. Give examples of three daily life activities in which osmosis is involved.
Ans- Osmosis is in which there is less solute concentration turn into more solute concentration.
In daily life there are many example which relate to osmosis some of them are as follows:
- While travelling in bus we get dehydrated faster than we walk.
• In daily life you feel thirsty more if you eat little junk food.
