Tea from Assam Extra Questions and Answers English First Flight Chapter 7
Summary
This chapter talks about Assam, its scenic beauty, and one of the most popular things found in Assam-tea.
Pranjol and Rajvir are classmates from a school in Delhi. Pranjol’s father is a manager of a tea garden named Dhekiabari in upper Assam.
Pranjol has brought his friend Rajvir home for a vacation. Being a native of Assam, he was not much interested in its scenic beauty. Rajvir was mesmerized by the tall and luscious trees, the freshness in the air, and the evenly cut tea shrubs.
Amidst that, the writer also mentions an ugly building with smoke billowing out of tall chimneys. The writer here contrasts the freshness of the natural world and the staleness of the human-made world.
Rajvir was more interested in the history of tea than Pranjol. He narrated that about the two different legends about the discovery of tea. One was about a Chinese emperor, and the other about an ancient Buddhist ascetic.
The legend about the Chinese emperor states that the invention of tea was unintentional. The emperor always boiled water before drinking it. On one such day, a few leaves of twigs fell in the boiled water and gave a great taste. The leaves were supposedly tea leaves.
Another legend is about a Buddhist ascetic, Bodhidharma. It is said that he cut off his eyelids because he fell asleep during meditation. Ten tea plants grew out of the eyelids. When the leaves of these plants were put in water, it banished sleep.
Tea was first discovered in China around 2700 BC. The words ‘chai’ and ‘chini’ are Chinese words. It was introduced in Europe in the sixteenth century as medicine rather than a beverage.
After Pranjol and Rajvir got down at the Mariani station, they were taken to Dhekiabari. Rajvir witnessed the tea-pluckers plucking newly sprouted leaves. He also witnessed the second-flush of tea leaves that lasts from May to July and yields the best tea.
