Yes there are millions of different aquatic species. Large amount of different species are found in pacific ocean, Arabian sea, Atlantic ocean, Indian ocean and in some fresh water areas such as Amazon river, Ganga river. India is a country of large diversity where species are found in coastal areas and the states present near coastal areas have their own traditional food such as in West Bengal, the famous food is rice with fish curry. The animals and plants which live inside the water are called as aquatic animals and aquatic plants. Example of aquatic animals- turtles, fishes, jellyfish, sharks, whales, octopus, crocodiles etc. Aquatic plants- water hyacinth, water lily, duckweed, musk grass. The lifestyle is different from the terrestrial one. The body system also not matched with other habitat animals. for example aquatic animals respire through gills, book gills whereas terrestrial organism respire through lungs. Also, aquatic animals have streamlined body to swim easily and also they have fins as a locomotory organ. There are some animals who can live in both land and water, they are called as amphibians. for example frogs, toads, salamander. Fishes and other aquatic animals not only live in water but they get oxygen from water. Aquatic ecosystems are divided into two types- marine ecosystem( ocean, sea, coral reefs) and freshwater system( rivers, pond, lake, wetlands). Aquatic animals are of great use such as they are primary consumer and aquatic plants are primary produces which are important part of food web, they give us food(fishes- mangur, rohu, salmon), edible oils( rich in vitamin A and D), from ocean depth we get petroleum products(kerosene, crude oil, gasoline etc.), pearl( very expensive) from oyster, occupation( fishing), rich in nutritional value(protein, vitamin, lipids and fats), maintain ecosystem balance, protect us against diseases such as introducing Gambusia fish in lake and pond can kill mosquito larvae( causes malaria). Also, they are used as tourism to attract tourists where people do scuba diving, surfing, water skiing. The main threats to aquatic ecosystems are overfishing, water pollution, habitat degradation, climate change, exotic species invasion. We can protect aquatic ecosystem by limiting the use of plastic to reduce water pollution, by treating the sewage water and factory waste before releasing into water bodies, do not introduce invasive species( alligator gar, African catfish, Asian carp) in water it can lead to extinct of many other species, using of eco- friendly products. In may 1956, the west coast of southern japan city name minamata in which four patients were admitted in hospital due to minamata disease. This is a neurological disease with mercury poison present in water bodies ( industrial waste water). This mercury was eaten by fishes in large amount and then human ate this fishes and cause food poisoning. Millions of fishes get killed in minamata disease.
