Assessment-
Ans:- (1) Self-management means, in simple terms, managing oneself. When one needs to achieve a goal or target, they need to keep in mind how they will carry out tasks and how much time they need to give to each task to reach that goal. Such management of materials needed for the target, time, identification of goals and prioritising goals that help a person to achieve their target easily is called self-management.
Ans:- (2) To achieve targets and goals of any kind, be it academic, professional or personal, one needs to be able to efficiently make and allocate time to tasks according to their priority and make sure that they are able to complete those tasks. To do such thing, one needs to be good in self-management. Therefore, self-management is important for us in the following ways –
(a) It builds an inspiring personality
(b) It gives clarity of thoughts
(c) It develops the ability to identify one’s own weaknesses and improve upon them
(d) Feeling of self-respect, respect for others and self-motivation
(e) Higher achievement rate with minimum efforts
(f) Success in studies, sports and later in career
Ans:- (3) Self-management skills such as identifying goals, planning, organising, time management and responsibility are necessary to achieve such a task.
Ans:- (4) The term S.M.A.R.T stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, Time-bound targets.
Ans:- (5) Goal refers to something a person may want to achieve in the long term. It can be related to academics, profession or personal life. For example, a person may want to achieve the completion of their full History syllabus 2 months before the final exams. The completion of the history syllabus is thus, a goal for that person.
A target refers to the smaller, short-term achievements that one needs to reach their goal. Whenever one wants to achieve a goal, it is not possible to do so immediately. The goal needs to be broken down into smaller, achievable parts. These parts are called targets. For example, the student who wanted to complete their history syllabus cannot do so in just one day. To achieve that goal, they will have to break down the goal into daily targets, such as studying one chapter daily. Thus, by fulfilling the daily targets, they will eventually achieve their goal.
Ans:- (6) A target that can be measured based on how much has been achieved and can be achieved based on the actual time available and circumstances is a measurable and realistic goal. For example – If the goal is to complete the history syllabus, and there are 10 chapters that the student needs to complete 2 months before the final exams, then the target that is set measurable. The target can be completing one chapter in two to three days, which means the syllabus will be completed in 20 to 30 days. Thus, it is a measurable target.
To have a realistic goal, one needs to keep in mind that they have other commitments that they must fulfil as well as sudden events may come up that will need their attention. Thus, if the student decides to complete the 10 chapters in one week it will not be realistic as they have to go to school, do homework as well as study for other subjects among other things. Thus, to set a realistic target one must keep in mind the existence of other things as well.
Ans:- (7) To prepare for the computer quiz which is to be held out of the text book, one needs to enforce S.M.A.R.T targets for themselves. Thus, the targets must be Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Time-bound.Based on this, the targets to prepare well for the quiz would be –
(a) Decide on how many chapters are to be prepare by what date/time. Example – Deciding on Sunday to complete 5 Chapters by Saturday, as the quiz is on Monday (Specific).
(b) The target should be measurable. One should know how much of the work will be completed within the set time limit. Here 5 chapters will be covered by Saturday. (Measurable)
(c) The target has to be set keeping in mind all the existing and upcoming engagements and capability of the student. (Achievable)
(d) The target must be set keeping in mind the time available and the time needed to prepare. Deciding to complete 5 chapters on Saturday itself is not realistic.
(e) The target is to be time-bound so that it is achieved without much delay and one has prepared themselves well.
Ans:- (8) Procrastination means delaying or postponing something. Thus, it becomes clear that procrastination makes one waste their time and prevents them from completing a goal that they set. When one procrastinates, they will spend a lot of time doing other stuff that will not help them reach their goals. For example – A student has set the goal that they will study 2 chapters of Computer each day to complete the syllabus. However, each day the student procrastinated their work and instead of studying spends time doing things like playing games, watching movies, going out with friends, etc. In the end, as the student did not meet their daily goal their work will pile up and they will need to complete a larger amount of work. Therefore, procrastination affects one’s progress towards one’s goals as they delay the completion of the work that is needed to achieve their goals.
Ans:- (9) Identifying goals and setting targets ease our preparation in achieving something. By identifying goals, we are able to understand what exactly is to be achieved. Without the identification of goals, it will definitely become very confusing for us to understand what exactly we want to achieve. Further, by setting targets we are able to make a definite a plan for how we will achieve something. By setting targets, we set a specific task to be completed with a given time which ensures that what we want to achieve is achieved without any delay. This is how identifying and setting targets ease our preparation in achieving something.
Ans:- (10) Reflection refers to comparing the set target with the outcomes of one’s hard work. Reflection helps a person further as it helps them evaluate their efforts and identify their strengths and weaknesses. While comparing the outcomes with the set target, one is able to understand the level of their performance and where they need to put more attention. For example – A student had set the target of getting 95 marks out of 100 in all the 5 subjects that she studies. She set her targets for achieving the goal and put in all her efforts. After her exams, she saw that she had received 95 and above marks in 4 out the 5 subjects and received 90 marks in 1 subject. Thus, by reflecting on her outcomes, she will be able to understand where she had lacked during the preparation of that one subject and be able to perform better next time. Along with this, as she had met her target in the other four subjects, reflection will help her feel much more motivated.
Ans:- (11) Time management is very important for achieving any goal. Every task or goal needs to be achieved within a set period of time, regardless of the amount of time allocated to each task may be different. Time management allows a person to achieve their various goals by helping them allocate the necessary amount of time for each goal or target. If one does not pay attention to time management, they will not be able to efficiently meet their goals in time.
We have time tables in school so that each and every subject along with co-curricular activities can get sufficient amount of time. If there is no time table, all the students and teachers will be confused about what is to be taught to which class and for how much time. It will lead to complete chaos in the school. Thus, a time-table ensures that each subject is taught to the classes for a specific amount of time that will be sufficient to complete the course in time, as well as allow time for the students to engage in co-curricular activities such as sports, arts and craft, music, etc.
Ans:- (12) Both prioritisation and self-discipline are important elements of time management. To achieve any task or goal, it is necessary that one should know how to manage their time. Through prioritisation and self-discipline, one can learn the skill of time management. Prioritisation enables a person to determine which tasks are more important and which tasks can be done later. It helps one allocate time and complete task according to the importance and urgency of a particular task.
Through self-discipline, one can easily manage their time efficiently. Self-discipline makes a person more dedicated towards achieving their goals in time. If a person is not disciplined enough, they will never be able to commit to any goal seriously and as an effect none of the goals that they set for themselves would be achieved. Self-discipline thus makes the person much more serious and dedicated towards achieving their goals in time, which means they will be able to manage their time efficiently.
Therefore, prioritisation and self-management help in managing time.
Ans:- (13) Self-confidence means having belief in your own capabilities and aspirations. Self-confidence is a necessary factor for achieving any goal in life. Without self-confidence a person will find it difficult to interact with others and in turn be unable to work towards achieving their targets. The reasons that cause a lack of self-confidence are –
(a) Being too worried about other’s opinion.
(b) Lack of initiative.
(c) Insufficient preparation
(d) Not taking up opportunities and avoiding dealing with them.
Ans:- (14) One of the factors that can help in boosting self-confidence is preparedness. When one is prepared for any target or goal, they are able to face any challenges that are thrown towards them in the process. Being prepared helps the person have some knowledge of what they are going to do, which means that they will not be confused or scared when they try to achieve their goals. For example – Being prepared for a class test will mean that the student knows what the topic for the test will be. They will be able to answer questions in the test easily which will fetch them good marks. Good marks will boost their confidence in themselves and will also motivate to even better in the future. Thus, preparation for something helps one retain their self-confidence.
