Answer the following questions in your own words with close reference to the text:
1.) What do you think were the “blended notes” which the poet heard?
Answer: I think the “blended notes” means the sounds of birds and the breeze, which were also present when there were trees.
2.) Why does the poet lament at the condition of man? What is the condition that the poet talks about?
Answer: The poet laments man’s predicament because, in his opinion, man has failed to maintain his true identity and has contributed to the demise of his own species. Nature’s various components coexist harmoniously, but man has not been able to coexist peacefully with others. The poet is referring to this state of man.
3.) In your own words describe the aspects of nature presented in the third, fourth, and fifth stanzas.
Answer: In the third stanza, the poet describes how the primrose, with its dense foliage, and the periwinkle, with its round garlands, enjoy the air they breathe. The poet’s delight and excitement are portrayed in the fourth stanza by the birds that hopped and played around him. In the fifth stanza, the poet describes the joy and pleasure of the new twigs.
4.) From your reading of the poem what do you understand by “Nature’s holy plan”?
Answer: In the poem “Lines Written in Early Spring,” the poet refers to “Nature’s holy plan” as the desire and intention of nature for all living things to coexist peacefully.
5.) What does the poet observe in nature, when he looks around him?
Answer: When the poet looks around, he notices that everything else follows, like trees and birds, which live happily together in perfect harmony. On the other hand, man has failed to coexist with other members of his species.
