1.) What were the events that led to Ivan’s arrest ?
Answer: A troika with jingling bells suddenly pulled up, and an official and two troops got out. He approached Ivan and started by questioning him about his identity and where he had come from. Ivan gave him a thorough response before asking if he would like to have tea with him. But the official kept probing him, including where he spent his past night and whether he was alone or with other business associates. Ivan had spent the previous evening with a merchant who had been discovered dead, his throat slit. Ivan is being looked into due to the fact that the merchant left the inn early morning. Also, while looking, the officer pulled a knife from Ivan’s luggage that was covered in blood. These were the events that resulted in Ivan’s incarceration.
2.) Describe the meeting between Ivan and his wife in the jail.
Answer: Ivan once made the decision to travel to the Nizhny fair. But due to a horrible dream, his wife attempted to stop him. Ivan had grey hair when he arrived from the town in her dream, she said. He dismissed her dream, though, stating that it was lucky. Ivan was detained on the way because he was thought to have killed a businessman. Even when she described her nightmare, Ivan’s wife still questioned the reason his nightmare started that day. She therefore believed he was responsible for the murder. He became even more dejected by the idea. He assured himself that only God was aware of the reality.
3.) How did the jail authorities come to know that someone had beendigging a tunnel under the jailwall? How did the enquiry end?
Answer: Ivan was well aware of the seriousness of Makar’s offence. He had attempted to break a hole in the wall of the prison compound and flee. Ivan discovered this by mistake. If he gave a false testimony against him, Makar threatened to murder him. At first, he became furious and demanded retribution for the twenty-six years he had spent in prison. Yet with time, he decided to remain silent and let God judge him for his offences. So why would I screen him when he destroyed my life, he reasoned. He remained silent when the Governor questioned him. He knew in his heart that they would flog him to death if he told them the truth.
