An elderly carpenter was ready to retire to live a comfortable life with his family.
2.) Why did he want to retire?
He wanted to retire even though he liked his paycheck because he wanted to give his family his attention and time.

Each week the old carpenter would miss his paycheck,i.e, regular payment of wages when he would retire.
