Answer the following questions in your own words with close reference to the text.
1.) What were the provisions made for educating the children at TolstoyFarm in South Africa ?-
Answer: Mahatma Gandhi didn’t want to engage special teachers for the students in small salary. Also, he didn’t want to import teachers from outside the farm. He believed in imparting knowledge by the parents and not from the outside help.
2.) Describe in detail the work done by the children at the Farm. How didphysical labour help them?
Answer: There were no servants in the farm, so all the work was done by the inmates.Everyone, young and old, was required to devote some time to gardening. The majority of this work, which included digging pits, felling trees, and lifting loads, was performed by the children. This gave them ample exercise which help them to be fit.
3.) How was literary training conducted· by Gandhi ?
Answer: Gandhiji had neither the resources nor the literary equipment to teach the students. He gave three periods at the most to literary training which were Hindi, Tamil, Gujrathi and Urdu. English was also taught.
4.) Describe the relationship of Gandhi .with his students.
Answer: Gandhiji got along with the students merrily. He believed in character building of the student and did the same thing which made him close with his students. When students used to malinger and shirked, he used to be strict with them. But he was a kind man who treated students with great care and love.
5.) What are Gandhi’s views on the education of children ?
Answer: For Gandhiji, the true learning comes from the teachers. He accepted that youngsters take in considerably more and with less work through their ears than through their eyes.He also believed that one learns much from experiences.
6.) Who was fond of gardening?
Answer: Mr. Kallenbach was fond of gardening.
7.) For which purpose Mr. ‘Kallenbach went to Trappist manastery ?What did he learn there ?
Answer: Mr. Kallenbach went to Trappist Monastery to learn take vocational training. There he learnt shoe-making.
